[QUOTE="mattbbpl"] He's not claiming greater longevity or overrall health. He's referring to the risk factors of very specific genetic conditions. Different races have higher occurrences of specific disorders within their population. For example, people of European descent are more likely to suffer from cystic fibrosis.

Cataclism

I think further investigation is warranted for each of these diseases. Of course we probably aren't going to filter this out in OT, but you can't just go on the blanket assumption because of one or two cases that most or even all are like the first cases. The same can be said of my argument as well, so I guess we are at the Agree to Disagree point.

I still hold my position that those ofhigher socio-economic standing stand a better chance of not being affected by these diseases and living longer.

Then how do you explain that whites are more likely to get skin and testicle cancer? Or cystic fibrosis?

I knew race was a really touchy subject in the US more than other places but this is bordering on the insanity. You cannot deny that different races have different genetic makeups and, subsequently, higher risk than others for certain diseases. That's simply not true and you're denying a FACT just because race is involved. That's an approach that health professionals quite simply cannot follow or they would be putting lives on the line for stupid reasons.

You can deny it all you want you won't change a thing. Sorry.

WTF? You expect me to accept your way of thinking when you doing even have evidence or examples? Your explanations are fallacious. You consider it "fact" because you refuse totake into accountat the other causes. You cannot force me or anyone to just believe your ignorant statments. Next thing you'll be claiming is that some races are inherently more intelligent than others because of genetics.

Ultimas, take a step back for a second. This has nothing to do with racism or general health.

Read the page I linked on cystic fibrosis - it not only lays out rates of occurrence, but the genetic cause of the disorder:

CF is caused by a mutation in the gene for the protein cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). This gene is required to regulate the components of sweat, digestive juices, and mucus. Although most people without CF have two working copies of the CFTR gene, only one is needed to prevent cystic fibrosis. CF develops when neither gene works normally and therefore has autosomal recessive inheritance.

CF is most common among Caucasians; one in 25 people of European descent carry one allele for CF.

Yes yes I understand what you are saying matt but I had already said previously Agree to Disagree because there were many situations in which either side could cite certain diseases and say they were right. I believe the CF argument is credible but not the whole argument. As I said earlier, agree to disagree.

Haha. No vein, but Cataclism demanding that I just believewhatever he says was in need of rebuttal. I think we are spotlighting certain cases anyway, and without looking a broader studies we are mostly pissing in the wind.

For those of you saying that race plays no role in disease, you are absolutely incorrect. There are certain diseases and metabolic disorders that are more common in some races than others. It doesn't make one race better/worse than another, it's just how things are. Pretending these differences don't exist is medical negligence. Doctors look at these things all the time.

Because risk for cancer and skin conditions have nothing to do with socio-economics. All of this has been proven.

I'm sorry but it doesn't matter if you don't disagree. There's simply nothing to disagree upon. What you're doing is like arguing that the sky isn't blue.

Just ask any doctor.

It's very interesting however that you assume blacks and hispanics have a worse socio-economic status...

Science has PROVEN, that there are no differentiations among humans, other than cosmetic features, like our skin color etc.
Maybe these higher stroke rates are due to what they do/eatlive etc and in-directly make the stroke rate high?

TheAcountantMan

That's not true.Blacks are more likely to get sickle cell disease than any other race.

Not true? It's more than that. The idea that the genes of different races can vary in cosmetic things but not anything else is pure fantasy. It's logically impossible.

...It is one thing to just believe things without researching them. Clearly this is all you do. However genius there are statistics all over the place that certify what I claim is TRUE.It is not an assumption it is true. Not that it matters to my argument, but I myself am Black. You are hinting at me being racist when you haven't even looked up the information. How can you expect anyone to believe your other arguments when you have these thinly veiled personal attacksand ridiculous claims. But yeah, I'm done talking to you, you have nothing of value to add to the argument.,

I wan't saying you're racist. It's obviously quite the other way around. Excessively so.

That's a sad thing (the data). But it doesn't change that different races have different tendencies to develop certain diseases. The fact that whites have more tendency for some diseases proves that socio-economics is not to blame for everything. Rather, genetics is the greatest culprit.

I lol at people who decieve themselves into thinking there isn't some correlation between race and certain disorders.

Whatver though, it's not really hurting anybody, just makes them appear ignorant.

Actually, it's very logical. The heterozygous condition for sickle cell disease gives immunity to malaria. Malaria obviously is more prevalent in Africa than anywhere else in the world. The African (black)race comes from Africa.

That's actually false. Genetic disorders vary in frequency amongst various races as well.

Yes, for example cystic fibrosis (autosomal recessive disorder) is more prevalent amongst white people. 1 in 20-25 are carriers of the faulty allele in some areas of the world.

Uhh..yeahh..no.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/12-of-the-DNA-Differs-Amongst-Human-Races-and-Populations-40872.shtml

They differ, because of their experiences, different "races" go through. where they live, what they do, what they eat, etc.
White people on average, tend to be wealthier, than the mentioned "races", with wealth, comes a more comfortable life, better quality food, less stress etc, this may come as a surprise to you, but.........that helps reduce strokes :@,

Former_Slacker

I'm not sure why you focused on stroke, as the article I posted mentioned several genetic disorders that have varying rates - Such as sickle-cell anemia.

That variability in disorders is not tied to race but to regions. There are many more mosquitoes in certain parts of Africa than in others and therefore, due to natural selection, locations that have higher mosquito and by extension malaria counts also have higher occurrences of heterogeneity and recessive homogeneity for the sickle cell anemia gene.

But regions are linked to race.

@ tenaka2 and Cataclism I don't see how is it is stupid. The people should be aware of different environment that others live. Health care and good education is not at everybody's disposal.
