Hotmail--better functionality, and better user interface. Spam can slip through sometimes, although Gmail is very good at nailing those SOBs. You can't go wrong with either, but I prefer Hotmail. My opinion isn't the most impartial though considering I've been using hotmail for over eight years now.
Hotmail is such a piece of crap in comparison. Also having an email as an ID makes its easier because everything I use is integrated, especially when I'm constantly switching from Windows/Ubuntu on my laptop.
