17 Republicans combined with Democrats have come forward to pass a clean funding bill without any strings attached to fund the Federal Government. This new bill will end the shutdown tonight. Except...

John Boener (speaker of the house) Will not put bill to a house vote.

That's right, this bill has enough votes to pass,

The House of Representives
The Senate
The Executive Branch

...Will be held back because of 1 man.

 List of Republicans Come forward

An informal rule that can easily be broken. No one is technically bound by it.

True, but you break it enough times then you are not Speaker anymore.

According to the Republican agenda. He is held accountable by his conference (fellow Republicans) and the American voters.

Soo...NONE of the Democrats would compromise on the 4 previous plans put forward. Now we have a good handful of Republicans who are willing to compromise to end this thing but its still the republicans who are going to be made to look like the bad guys.

Um, no. Doesn't work that way. The Republicans ae asking Obama to cave on his signature legislation, one that has passed through Congress, the President's reelection, and the SCOTUS. Sorry, GOP, but Obamacare is the law of the land.

It's completely illogical and irresponsible for the GOP to hold the country hostage over the ACA. You change laws through elections, the public, campaigning, not by holding up the Constitutional process of the US.

That's ridiculous. If a group of people carpool together to a concert and agree to split the gas money, it would be unreasonable for the driver, after reaching the destination, to demand that the other passengers pay for the gas entirely before he will be willing to drive them home and then blame the other passengers for making them late.

a "clean" funding bill is dumb. Repubs want Obamacare defunded, Dems want it fully funded. They shut meet in the middle and cut the funding in half or at least cut certain things like the attempts to get pro-athletes to promote Obamacare.

Some Democrat Senators will be blamed as well, at least in their own states where Obamacare or at least certain provisions are unpopular.

You don't just shut the doors and walk away. You have to actually do things in preparation for a shutdown and then do more things to reopen. I believe the last shutdown cost between 1 and 2 billion dollars.

Maybe. But on the other hand you think some savings would come from the reduced operations during the shutdown.

Furloughed workers are generally offered back pay. It's not a legal obligation to do so, but it's generally done as a sign of good faith because you've already screwed with them quite a bit at that point. Add to that the fact that revenue is lost while fixed costs continue to be incurred, and you have a recipe for a healthy loss.

Yeah but at least they should save on ink, paper, water, electricity. They should give furloughed people backpay though.

Honestly, I've heard enough from these Republican trolls. Obamacare is LAW now. It was voted, it passed, it was considered constitutional, it passed. It's the f*cking law. There is no room to compromise. There is no compromise. It's the f*cking law, and it was all done by the books. The books that republicans claim to love so much.

He ended his meeting with the White House this evening reiterating that he won't bring a clean vote to the floor.

Besides, he's unofficially had these votes for a week. The moderate portion of the caucus is just applying pressure by making some of the individual votes (enough to pass the thing) public and concrete.

They've comprimised plenty previously, why should they have to continue to comprimise on a bill they already passed?

NASA may miss the launch window for the Mars orbiter Maven, next window is 2016. It may not be "directly essential", but I think it would be pretty f*cked up that it's not considered important enough for the government to keep funded.

Oh, WIC and SNAP if it runs on too long run out of money, states will have to pick up the tab. NIH, NSF, NASA, EPA, FDA, ect. Nothing "essential" though.

I swear: you say some of the dumbest sh!t.

It makes no fvcking sense for Obama and the Dems to halfway defund Obamacare.

They want it to work out, so they are hardly going to slash the funds in half, nor should they be obligated to just to satisfy a childish and extreme element of the Republican Party.

The Post office doesn't use taxpayer money and hasn't for decades. Why would it close down? However, the post office is not fine. Republicans passed a law in the 2006 forcing them to fund 75 years worth of pensions in 10 years (a burden no other business has to shoulder) and have been bleeding money, cutting services, and raising the cost of stamps ever since just to survive.

Members of Congress need to draft a discharge petition so they can bypass the Hastert rule. If that doesn't work then someone should bring forward a resolution declaring "vacant the office of Speaker" and force Boehner out of his speakership long enough to force him to regain his speakership. And they should do this every time they vote to defund Obamacare or whenever they feel like it until he gets replace or until he learns how to be a speaker.

the shortfall arises from the ( fairly new ) legislated need for the usps to pre-fund retiree healthcare obligations, something most private companies do not have to do. but generally speaking the post office does operate itself on the revenues it generates
