I belive that the fact that americans don´t really like football relates more to the fact that they were never really good at it.

I guess if the US national team was at the same level of teams such as Italy,Brazil,France,Spain,Portugal,England,Netherlands,Argentina,Germany, etc, teams with greater chances of winning a World cup(and most already did),they would certainly enjoy it a lot more.

But in the end,it´s more of a cultural thing.

I think almost everyone plays it as a kid because you can really simplify it for 4-5 year olds. Soccer can get very competitive in wealthier towns with different levels of traveling teams, and leagues being around in the spring and fall, with indoor in the winter. Football is king though. The Super Bowl is a virtual national holiday, Midwestern and Southern college football games regularly draw 80,000-100,000+ week in and week out, and the Cowboys and Lions are as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey.

[QUOTE="DA_B0MB"][QUOTE="rawsavon"]Not...thread over Serioulsy though, not that popular...even though many people like it - I would say more play than watch...which is a good thing -it ranks behind Football (American), basketball, baseball, nascar, golf, and mma...probably a little better than Hockey as far as watching interest goes

Better than hockey? That's completely untrue. Hockey's been on on the rise lately. I'm not sure fi you remember this but before boring Devils hockey took over and the lock out Hockey was immensely popular. Soccer was never popular on the US television. Soccer is played but I know very few people who watch it professionally.

Hey, leave the Devs alone. A winner is a winner.

That is why I said "probably" soccer is on ESPN and Hockey gets a few games on network tv (not many though) They are both far down the list as far as the popularity of professional/college sports goes...

Hockey may not be on ESPN anymore but most teams have strong followings in their city/state. I live in NC (not exactly the biggest hockey state) but I watch the Hurricanes and know alot of people that watch too. It's not as big as football or basketball but still alot bigger than soccer. I don't know anybody at all that watches soccer.

I didn't intend to sound so sharp on my opinion. ESPN once had a deal with the NHL but the NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is a complete idiot and sold viewing rights to a company that was at the time known as the "outdoor life network" (now known as Versus). It's the NHL's own fault that it isn't higher up on the totem pole unfortunately. High offense teams like the Capitals and Penguins seem to be helping the NHL's cause again though. I'd say the NHL is 5th overall in US viewing. I'm not sure where I'd place soccer exactly but I'd put it below Hockey.

Both are more regional -Hockey is big in the "original 6" cities (Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburg, etc.) -Soccer is bigger near the Southern border because of the huge influx of Mexican, Cuban, and other Latin American Immigrants into primarily Texas and Florida...big enough for espn to have a Spanish channel that prominently features soccer Both are far down the list though -but soccer is increasing, while Hockey is decreasing (talks on contraction in the NHL are not a good sign)

A lot of people say we should play more soccer in the US, but I don't see why we need a sport where every game ends in a riot.
