Its not the guys in the helicopters fault it was whoever ordered the attack. From orders the Airmen must've believed that they were the enemy. It shouldn't have happened and its bad. But Im not losing any sleep from it though. And still plan to enlist in the Marine Corps when I turn 18 next june.

And if you lived here you would know that they proably aren't. A high percentage of Military that come back suffer from Post Traumatic Stress disorder. And are in need of major counseling and therapy.

Accidents happen in war....now I'm not saying it was right, but this does happen. No one is proud of it. Now if you find a video of soldiers just randomly firing into a crowd of unarmed civilians then you have a story.

The 17-minute video was posted online at Wikileaks.org, an investigative Web site that publicizes sensitive documents and information leaked by anonymous sources in order to expose corruption and wrongdoing. Wikileaks obtained the footage "from a number of military whistleblowers," according to a description accompanying the footage on the Web site CollateralMurder.com. Wikileaks editors had to decode the encrypted version of the leaked video in order to view its contents and air it. In the video, when shooters inside the helicopter start to zero in on the pedestrians below, they can be heard identifying the objects they are carrying as an AK-47 and an RPG. But according to an Associated Press article quoting an unnamed U.S. military official, "a military investigation later concluded that what was thought to be an RPG was really a long-range photography lens; likewise, the camera looked like an AK-47."

yeah that pretty much sums it it......accidents happen.....especially in a military zone.......comes with the job...

well it's not like all of us are involved in this. In fact the large large large majority of people here have nothing to do with this. I'm guessing that's how we live like this.

I listened they heard shots being fired and spotted a man with a gun and rpg. They must've thought that they were militants and why would journalists be so close to the enemy. Thats my opinion anyway. There is nothing there that says they knew they were civilians. And Now that I rewatched it they mistoke the camera on the strap as a AK that can happen from that high up.

I dont care, only because its not me, my family, nor my friends. As long as none of them are hurt, or doing anything screwed up, Then the rest of the world can, kill and steal from whom ever they choose, it has rarley effected me.

It's not as if the guys in the helicopter were flying around looking for random people to kill. They thought at the time the group was armed. They also thought the group had an RPG so they took action. Nobody sitting around on their computer watching these videos on Youtube know what goes through a soldiers mind in the middle of a warzone in that situation. If you were there and you saw a group of armed hostitles, including a weapon that could take down your helicopter, you'd react the same way. In addition, they got orders from above them they had to follow through on. For guys in the middle of war, it's either them or the enemy.

It's easy as hell to be a Monday morning quarterback and analyze the situation after the fact knowing details these guys didn't have at the time. This isn't taking away that it's horrible a mistake was made and innocent lives were lost, but to treat these guys as murderers is completely wrong.

It's just collateral damage.....which is always apart of war. Could it have been avoided? Maybe, but if I'm out there I kill to be safe.

Agreed. So many people can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that these soldiers are in the middle of a WAR. A real "these people are trying to kill you" war. If you truely believe someone can and will kill you, I highly doubt you are going to second guess that and think "Does he really have a gun? Is he really going to shoot me?"

I'm sorry but if I'm in a helicopter and I see you with what I think is an RPG, that could be used to take down my helicopter and kill me. I'm shooting you. I wouldn't hesitate for a second when it comes to the notion that if I do hesitate it could cost me my life, the lives of everyone else in the helicopter, and the lives of anyone on the ground who get caught in the crash.

nice try..there's the tiny difference of purposely targeting civilians as opposed to accidently shooting somone in a combat zone because there were mistaken as combatants.......

Exactly. Also, had there really been an RPG, that helicopter could've gone down.

I know it's cool and in style to trash the US military as being a bunch of murderers, but I can guaruntee you there isn't a military in the world makes as much of an effort to prevent civilian causiulaties. Of course people will continue to believe that American soliders just walk up and down the streets of Bagdad just randomly shooting Iraqis for fun.

That was a pure mistake, the guys mistook the jurnalists for armed militia so he engaged them... It was a mistake, but the soldiers shouldn't be persecuted for just acting how they are seposed to.

Once again you are looking at the video from the context of knowing the outcome. You know it was a error, you know they werne't armed, and you've had plenty of time to watch and analyze it.

These guys are in the middle of a WAR zone. These soldiers are shot at and killed on a daily basis, and unlike past wars, they have no freakin clue who is an enemy or a friend. They thought the group was hostitle, especially with someone having an RPG and took the action they felt they needed to take to protect their lives.

It's easy for you to call them evil or murderers from the comfort of your computer chair though.

I'm sure you realize that this is only the tip of an iceberg full of tragedy's more severe. Its the way of life currently and won't change anytime soon. Most American citizens have been so sheltered to "death" that they walk around everyday with the mentality that it could never happen to them and when it does, to them, a family member, child, they are confused and shocked.

Their are many things in life we can "cheat" through. Killings, Death; not so much.

Cheers

I dont care, only because its not me, my family, nor my friends. As long as none of them are hurt, or doing anything screwed up, Then the rest of the world can, kill and steal from whom ever they choose, it has rarley effected me.

MrAmbush

Well that's pretty ignorant.

I sleep at night knowing I would never do something like that. Although it's not really these people's fault, they were just following orders, for all they knew those people could have had rocket launchers ready to shoot them down. It's a shame that the military teaches people to act this way. I really do not like the military, I don't even understand the point of having such a large one.

Seriously, have you guys no conscience? How can you sleep at night?

Remember this video leaked by wikileaks awhile back about a chopper taking down some Jurnalists in Iraq and wounding 2 children in the process?

Well guess what the animals that did it are still free walking down our streets, being proud of serving their homeland :S thinking shoting unarmed people is something to be proud of :s While the guy that suppostly leaked the video ( a 22 year America boy) in in PRISON by its OWN GOVERMENT, for exposing war crimes, and guess what they ( the american goverment) want to execute the guy

Heres the story

and here is the leakers website

Half-Way

your seriously surprised? lol

we are talking about a country that continued the support for a war AFTER it turned out the whole reason for the war was a lie.

we know what nationalism can turn people into. the people who support and defend everything the government dose will turn into nazi zombies, just like the people in former germany.

a little skepticism has always been healthy

You can't be serious. You except us to leave a country after its been invaded and its goverment is in shambles. Wouldn't take long forit to turn into another Somalia.

Then send your own military to do it.Don't forget to help korea and the rest of europe as well. darkfox101
Why is it our job to "help" everyone? We need to stop worrying about the rest of the world and accept our position as a declining world power.

[QUOTE="Tetrarch9"][QUOTE="Sandvichman"] By the sound of the conversation they were having, it sure wasn't an enemy. darktx2005

Yes someone who understands!

wait do you guys even know what you are talking about? the video was edited and editorialized to make US troops look bad. The reporters were with armed insurgents that had AK47s.... they simply chose not to point it out the actual weapons in the video because the only goal was to make the military look bad.... so they only pointed out the cameras and completely ignored the actual guns.

there were skirmishes in the area.... they identified armed men... they may have made the mistake of thinking one of the cameras was an RPG.... but there were actual armed men in the crowd. They fired on armed men in the middle of a war zone.

EDIT: not to mention these guys were trained to go into areas too dangerous for regular journalists... and they didnt notify the military of their presence. And just to make the point clear, multiple men in the group had REAL GUNS.

Yes, obviously leaving now would be a terrible mistake. We should have never even gone in the first place though, and it won't be long before we invade another country, I'm guessing Korea again, which is going to be a huge mistake. Why do the people let this happen? Can't they see the sanctity of human life, I can't stand my nation right now, all they want to do is kill.

[QUOTE="SkyWard20"]did you see the video? there was a guy with a bottle or something right next to the group of people that were shot and he was clearly unarmed.Omni-Slash

there's nothing "clearly" about that video...now imagine making the decision in real time....thinking your life could be ended...:|

just curious, why did those troops assume those guys were insurgents? what business does your army have to be there in the first place?

I concur wholeheartedly; reinforces the point that tragedy's such as these are full of so many grey areas from both parties that morals can not be easily defined anymore. Good or bad, right and wrong; the fine line between the two we grow up knowing becomes obscured; doubts set in; the country we love isn't so "pure".

It's a shame that military teaches people to protect the lives of their fellow soldier in a middle of a warzone? You just said it's not really their fault because for all they knew that group had RPG's, yet you then are ashamed the miltary teaches soldiers to react? What do you expect them to do?
