I don't know if it's because I'm getting older but when I watch new TV shows or I watch new episodes of the simpsons or family guy or south park, they just aren't as funny as they used to be and I barely laugh. The same thing with wrestling too, it used to be better in the 90s but now it's just awful.

Why does it seem like most TV shows are so bad now?

Well I agree older shows that are still around aren't as good as they used to be. But I disagree with the notion that TV isn't as good as it used to be. But I'm perfectly content with shows like Dexter, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, and Eureka still on the air.

This thread again? I'll respond the same way as I have in all these "TV sucks now" threads with the simple fact that TV has been better in the last 10 years than it has ever been.

I'm inclined to think the people complaining aren't looking in the right places. Family Guy and Wrestling? TV would be a bleak and depressing place if that's all there was to watch. Sure there's an influx of medical/forensic crime dramas on TNT/USA, but there's a lot better out there too.

Spend a few weeks digging through what AMC, FX, or HBO have to offer. This fall alone, I've picked up four new series I'm really digging and will continue to watch until the networks cancel or run them into the ground.

There are just way too many reality shows on TV nowadays. I don't care to see the life of a guy driving around the country and looking at the inside of a kitchen cabinet to see if there is a bottle of Heinz ketchup from 1954. Not that I don't like watching history shows or even things like American Pickers, I just get tired of the same repeats and attempts to copy other shows.

It's not worse or better than it used to be. You probably just don't enjoy it as much nowadays because you have higher standards than when you were younger. The only thing that old tv series has over newer ones is nostalgia.

This but I'll go even further back b/c i believe the 90's was the start of more innovative television (both in comedies and drama) so yea i feel that these past 20 years have given us better tv than the three decades prior.

It's because of the shows you are watching. I'm older and I quit watching South Park a long time ago. I think there's more variety and better shows on now than there were in the 90's and early 2000's. I enjoy at least a dozen shows now with Game of Thrones being my favorite. If you watch fake wrestling and comedy cartoons like South Park and Family Guy, you have to realize they start to run out of ideas and shock tactics that made them great in the first place. TV and music are not worse as many will have you believe.

TV is better now than it ever was. There's just MUCH more of it thus there's more crap.I think maybe those that thinks TV is worse now than it "was" is obviously too young to remember how TV was before we had a thousand channels blasting through our satellites.

Not if you like comedies.

Especially if you like comedies.

The fact that more sitcoms have moved away from the laugh track in the last 10 years is a really good thing.

This is the only genre I'll agree with being better before. I prefer 80s and early 90's sitcoms to today's.

There are FAR more quality televisions shows now. You just happen to be watching crap. Maybe it's time to get into some more mature fare then The Simpsons and wrestling if you think you're getting too old for television.

It seems like the quality of everything is really bad, I think new music is worse then new TV though but it's still not that good.

I felt the same as some of you then I saw Once upon a Time last Sunday and at least in my eyes it was the most original show I have seen in years and cant wait for more I hope its on for at least a few years.

Disclaimer: I have not seen the 10th kingdom or read the fables comics so in my eyes I have never seen a concept like this before. So dont get all frazzled because you feel either of these media are too similar OUAT

jetpower3

 It's true. There is an expiration date for a lot of shows from the 90s. I'll always like Buffy, but there is a very good chance if I started watching today (with no connection to previous Joss Whedon productions) I don't think I would enjoy it nearly as much. I might not even make it past the first season.

Stargate SG-1 is another contender. I started watching it not even two-three years ago, and pretty much enjoyed the DVDs. I tried going back again to show my sister, and with exception to the pilot episode (still awesome), a lot of season 1 is godawful. We made it five episodes in before I admitted defeat.

And regarding comedy, peoples' tastes definitely change over time. When I was younger, I never sat down to watch any kind of sitcom. I thought they were boring and all the same. Now Arrested Development and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are some of my favourite shows of all time, and I have a slew of sitcoms under my belt that I can call damn good viewings.

Hell, just in the summer, I even said in an OT discussion that I didn't like animation. Just started Archer yesterday, and it's friggin' great.

Well, certainly some shows from any era are going to be of high quality and age well. But I found that many of the shows I used to like had not aged well, were never good to begin with (and thus my tastes were too immature for me to know), or had been remembered by me primarily in a nostalgic sense. I can also imagine that since I belonged to a markedly different demographic, I am now well beyond the target audience the shows were designed for. And thus, much of it just seems silly, cliched, or out of place.

It seems to be a function of changing aesthetics, maturity/age level, and expectations.
