Oh gosh that would be kind of a long blogtastic kind of entry to go through all the different stages as to what I got exposed to and how and why and all that. But short story I suppose it was just a lot of typical radio in the '70s, alternative radio and buying random albumsin the '80s, and then working and running record stores in the '90s. These days it's lots of internet hopping via suggestions from Amazon, associative bands and friendsat Last FM, and then stuff that looks interesting that I see people listening to in WAYLT.

Rob Zombie/White Zombie, Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, than eventually I got into like Jpop and stuff, and than I got into Cores like Metalcore, Deathcore, stuff like that along with some other stuff, than American Pop. I always liked rock pretty much.
I still retain most of my tastes btw, I'm not the type to find something and decide he doesnt like what he liked before. I have a very open taste in music.

When it comes to Metal I dont know what to call the Genre I like, but I fancy me some Opeth. Yes, Fancy.

[QUOTE="GTR2addict"][QUOTE="KHAndAnime"]I listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers, rap, and Linkin Park when I was a little kid. Then when I was 10 I heard Iron Maiden and I was blown away. Eventually I heard Iced Earth and then eventually steered towards black and death metal. I can't stand RHCP, rap, LP, or Iced Earth anymore. KHAndAnime
I don't see why you'd just veer away from Iced Earth, they're a perfectly fine power metal band, even i have moved to black and death metal but i still love edguy, symphony X, stratovarius...

For lack of a better explanation, Iced Earth just feels nerdy/awkward and too formulaic to me. I can't listen to Iced Earth, Edguy, or similar bands without feeling a sense of embarrassment. The music lacks pride.

I actually find a lot of power metal to be good, emotive and proud on just about every level, but that's just me... Thrash is my main genre, i love death and such, but the energy, raw speed and rythm of thrash are too awesome

I was raised on a lot of 80's songs even though I was born in the 90's. A lot of freestyle, hip-hop and 80's.

From the radio and movies heard about other songs with 80's still my main music love. Gorillaz with Daft Punk got me into other stuff as well as friends giving me others types.

By the way, my love for music really came from my parents. Even when I lived in India, there was always music playing in my house. It just really grew on me.

I grew up with 60's music when I was young because of my parents. Then I discovered 70's metal, then 80s metal, then 90s metal. I just always liked heavier music. Although stuff like death metal, has to be the right band, otherwise I don't have an interest in it.

I have a weird history in my music taste. I first started off listening to pop and R&B but then switch over to rap. After that I started listening to pop/rock like Linkin Park and Green Day and it then slowly developed into a rocker. My genre taste now is alternative rock, metal, nu-metal, and some old rock.

I started out listening to pop when I was young. And then I got into bands like Rise Against and Disturbed, when I was 14. Then later I started listening to metalcore bands like AILD, BFMV, ABR and KSE (Embarrassing). And when I was 16 i got into my first Folk/Melodic Death metal band (Avereon) I loved them and have been listening to melodeath and black ever since. I also recently got into Math/Djent metal after listening to some prog bands like Blotted Science and Animals As Leaders, I really like the off time signatures.

My mom listened to a lot of everything, from classic rock, old school funk, jazz. So I guess from her I get my wide range of music, but the internet is what really set it off. Just being able to constantly search for artists ive never heard of etc etc.

What decade would that be? On a side note if you stumble on the right people I don't think you can become the person that just listens to top 40 nonsense.

Dunno. I actually really didn't listen to music until three years ago. Before that, it was whatever was on the radio. I started then listening to my parent's music, mainly classic rock, and then went from there, getting recommendations from people here and there. Now, I don't listen to classic rock as heavily as I did, but it's still a big part of my taste.

I am 21 so whatever my generation would be called, it seems like all my peers not only accept***(need sleep) mediocrity but embrace it. Maybe its just the south east because southern hip hop did put the biggest smear on the genre..

Started listening to Linkin Park, then Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, Slipknot, etc.

Now it's all form of cores, pop-punk, alternative, and various forms of rock.

It probably won't change that much anymore I think.

I started writing, short stories, novels, whatever. At some point I hit a wall, or writers block. I started listening to music when I would write and really fell in love with that, and gradually it just became whatever I was listening to on my good days of writing, mixed with the songs that were generally good, I got hooked too.

I grew up listening to Beatles, The Doors, Zeppelin and Joplin and all that because my parents, aunt and uncles all listened to it. My dad was into 50's rock so I heard a lot of that, and my grandmother got me interested in Swing/Big Band. In the mid-80's when I started skateboarding I was introduced to bands like Dead Milkmen, Dead Kennedys, Jane's Addiction, Sucidial Tendancies, etc. I also started listening to classical and jazz around this time.

In the early 90's I got into Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and the grunge scene, and about the same time started listening to NIN and such.

My ex-wife introduced me to 80's new wave, like The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, and also stuff like Depeche Mode.

I listened to oldies/classic rock for my childhood. I briefly went through a pop phase (mostly just Backstreet Boys) in late elementary school. Early in junior high I first got into Linkin Park, The Offspring (still love 'em!), and Slipknot. I moved on from most of that stuff to all kinds of metal. I was in love with metal when I was 13-15. One day I just stopped listening to it. Sometime when I was 15 I decided to stop hating The Beatles and give them a chance. I listened to "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" and was shocked and enthralled and wanted more and more. I then got heavily, HEAVILY into '60s music...all sorts of it. I loved it all. I especially got into psychedelic music. I'm 18 now and I still like all of the same stuff from when I was 15. A few other genres I've liked for years are ska, jazz, classical, and so forth. Sometime when I was 17 I got into Elliott Smith. Getting into his music opened up many doors to other kinds of music that I'd probably have scoffed at in the past (you know, singer-songwriter stuff). That's where I'm at now. I like most kinds of music though. I just really like music. I'll give almost anything (except for country, radio pop, and most metal aside from folk metal) a chance these days.

Did you ever go through the phase where "alternative" (for lack of a better word to summarize unusual rock :P) was boring for you? I'm trying to train myself to NOT think most is boring, but it's not really working. :P

Hmm...maybe for a little while! Yeah, actually I think that coincided with my crazy oldies/classic rock/psychedelic rock phase when I was in high school.

my mom got me into classical music at a super young age, and then she got me into the verve, blur, björk, rammstein, from softer genres to harder genres, all the way to experimental electronica. My taste in music is pretty much a mirror reflection of hers. :3

Deftones was my idea tho.

My early liking for rock/classic rock came from my father, then my love for jazz/disco/other 60-70' era music came from my mother, then metal and its many sub genres from my brother, country and alternative from my older sister, and finally pop/pop-like from my younger sister. Internet in general has gotten me into house/techno and classical stuff. I have a major influence for every genre except for rap.

influence from my parents, namely my father.

he'd play miles davis and coltrane on the record player and i adored listening to it.

i was additionally influenced from my brothers, who listened to primarily 90's grunge and some older rock.

Right now? From a completely open mind and complete Internet saturation from every genre.

How I got to this state? Well my family has always been musical, every member played an instrument at some point. I learned Piano for many years and eventually became a drummer. Was always interested classical, but in regards to other music I only really like a few tracks that were on the radio. My main taste influenced was by my parents and my sister. I got into Muse through my sister and saw them live when I was around 14. Then I discovered Metallica, and explored through metal. Eventually ending at with Avant-Garde, Folk and Progressive Metal which was diverse enough to convince me to expand my taste into other genres. I used numerous websites to find the best of nearly every genre. I didn't instantly like a lot of it, but after countless hours of listening and discussing music I dropped all my pretensions and could finally appreciate all these great artists. Now I am just basically a fan of good music. You still have to discriminate based on what sounds good to your ears. You should never be so open-minded that you just like everything, but to at least not have any mis-conceptions can greatly enrich you as a listener.
