its been illegal forever to download music from the internet whether using torrents or using a file sharing program like limewire, which seem to be the 2 most popular ways nowadays. how do people get caught?  seems like a lot of people at college last year would just get their internet shut off and would have to prove they uninstalled the downloading program. but this year it seems like kids are getting hit worse, and are being sued for thousands of dollars for the songs theyve downloaded. they actually look at what you download and hold you accountable for those songs. but some people say they never downloaded those listed in the email they get, is it a scam?

how likely is it to be caught? i know its likely to be caught if youre on a school internet but what about home internet, are those people at risk too? how does someone know if you are downloading, what gives them the right to look or even care? do you have to do a certain amount? if you were to get caught for it, would you know right away or can they get you 10 years down the road?

just wondering, i dont download, just curious how the whole system works.

They can track you by your ip address (which they can get from your internet service provider if they suspect anything). Buy your music, folks. I do.

If you're pirateing from any program using the FastTrack network i.e. Kazaa, Morpheus or other network based p2p system they can just look into your shared folders. if you use torrents they can get your IP address from the list of peers found in all bittorrent programs. If you d/l torrent you have very close to 0 chance of being sued by the RIAA. in fact I dont think they have ever sued a bittorrent user. FastTrack network it's much more likely that you will be sued but still relatively low. either one you use, run PeerGuardian 2 and route your p2p for extra layers of security. @funnymario: Canada owns the US for that one reason. and I live in the US.

It also depends on what you actually do download.  Almost all the music I download is originally from labels that aren't under the RIAA, and therefore not important to the RIAA, even if I do download a lot.  Movies, on the other hand, is pretty much based on luck.  They used to be able to catch people with fake torrents, but the leechers have figured that out.  I've downloaded a few movies in the past, mostly relatively unknown flicks that the MPAA probably doesn't care about.  But with movies (and expensive software like Adobe), you're taking a bigger risk.

I just avoid movies altogether. That's what there watching. Although I think all they're doing is sending out DMCA notices and calling it a day. Most software is relatively safe.

it really depends on what you use. If you ever used Kazaa or the like they will probably have a record on you. However if you just stop now and move to BT you will be much safer. Also I wouldn't suggest downloading anything on a college network.

Third party companies use digital surveillance check to see users that have a high bandwidth, then you will be monitored regularly and they can also monitor your downloads.  Most people are lucky to get a warning email but serious downloaders get a legal letter.

Just looked it up, google is your friend

yeah i heard they looks for high bandwith. it just seems like everyone downloads, some more than others, so its weird when a random person who doesnt download much gets a 3000 dollars fine. why is it so random? it seems like everyone on a school network, or atleast thousands, would get sued.

Nobody gets caught for downloading music, it's uploading where they sue people.

It's tough to figure out just how they do it because each group has a different method (they also use different 3rd party companies), and they keep how they do it as secret as possible.
I think they basically they setup a fake file, or become a peer on a file.  Then they keep track of how much you upload to them.  It's fairly easy to say IP X had uploaded so much data to us, or I think w/ torrents they can keep track of ratio so they can say IP X has a ratio of 200:1 so they uploaded 200 copies of the album.

If I stole music off the net I'd still support the artists I like by buying a t-shirt (from their website), or even going to a concert (even if ticket prices are uber high).

Yeah it is still illegal to download but i don't think the RIAA cares about downloading as much as uploading, but if you upload, your ass is grass, and the RIAA is gonna smoke it. I mean, I think that is how it goes. I barely, or if at all download. I am busy, plus I buy CDs. I think that if your gonna buy a CD of a band, that you just ripped, you should be ok.

Most of the copyright laws are writen for reproduction and distributing of copyright materials.  This is worded differently from drug laws where lawmakers make a difference between trafficking and possession.  Of course major media companies don't want people to get wind of this and try to scare them straight by pushing the download idea onto people that don't really know any better.

Yeah, the most I really want to pay for a CD is 15 bucks. Especially when it's actually legal to download music in Canada, they better give me a good reason to actually buy the CD.

In Romania no one cares what illegal downloads you have done, but I never used P2P and I will never use it. I prefer to buy the CDs - there are many CDs out there with such brilliant box art that you would buy them just for the artwork. Other than that, the only music I download from the Internet are from independent artists who disperately need to be promoted...

I don't pay for music, nor do I steal it. I simply register using a fake email for URGE's 14 day free demo and I get to listen to all the free music I want for 14 days, then I make another acount./

if you turn of sharing music in limewire prefernces, and you have a firewall, your pretty much safe. If the RIAA is looking at people who downlaoded a specific song, theyll see that you have only downlaoded that song and will skipp you. The people who get caught are the people who have 5000-10000 songs downlaoded and are sharing them...

What kind of Firewall, just a standard Windows Firewall??? Yeah I mean, I really don't think they care if you are downloading them, that much, I mean, maybe a little, but when it comes to Sharing, or Uploading, I think they get Filthy Pissed about that.
