There is so much obesity threads lately I will add another. This is how do people let themselves get so fat to the point they can't walk? Wouldn't you think that once they can't lift their own humanity from the face of the planet that they might think they should stop? When they have to fight an epic battle to get up off of a chair you would think they would start to reduce their size.

Obesity is a sickness brought on by addiction. A food addiction is no different then an addiction to alcohol, gambling, drugs, or anything else to excess. The reason it is so rampant is that it generally goes unaddressed as a social issue. People just say "If you are fat then stop eating." But thats as irrational as saying "If you are addicted to pain killers, stop taking pain killers." Addicts need help outside of just, "stop doing what you're doing"

Unless you have been obese, or have seen someone you care about struggle with weight issues, you have no room to judge. It can be a very, very difficult battle with addiction, emotions and social stigmas.

Imagine that you eat to fill an emotional void, something negative in your life, and you encounter some idiot who laughs at you or worse. That just feeds into the emotional spiral.

I'll freely admit that there are obese people out there who have no excuse, but you cannot judge the whole basedon a few individuals.

Food is delicious. I gained over 25 pounds (5'8 175 at the moment) over the past 2 years because I have a lot of free time and I'm lazy. I go out to the movies, theme parks, water parks etc etc but they're not phisically demanding activities. On my free time I play video games and do music and food is awesome when you're in that mode. I can DEFINITELY understand if someone gains a lot more than I did. Food and entertainment make up for a great time and before you know it you have gained weight and you're hooked on that cycle.

I don't think anyone actually laughs at obese people, unless they're like 10 years old. I know someone who was obese. He lost like 60-100 pounds since January. He even opened an ice cream shop and has been able to keep losing weight. He told me "Well, I thought that I've been eating all my life, it wouldn't hurt to stop". Obviously it's not that simple though.

lol @ comparing food "addiction" to being addicted to painkillers. That's laughable. Opiate withdrawals/Dope sick is is not comparable with being slightly hungry or craving a cheeseburger.. not even close.

It isn't an addiction to the food, it is an addiction to the dopamine released by the process of eating. And while withdrawal symptoms may not be as serious as opiate withdrawal, it does cause severe stress and anxiety, much like any other addicted person looking for a "fix".

I used to be 306 pounds a year and a half ago, I'll tell you the trick. Eat at night tons of fatty foods and don't excersise. Also eat a lot of fast food dinners, taco bell works like a charm.

I don't know where to begin.

Obesity is a multi-factorial issue. Within a very compressed timespace humans have:

  • Made food supply abundant through outlets like Supermarkets (Easy to access calories).
  • Improved farming methods (Haber process, fertalizer, crop rotation etc etc increase yields)
  • Made travelling long distances very easy (Car saves plenty of calories).
  • Replaced many manual labour jobs with machine automated counterparts (even the chainsaw saves a huge number of calories)
  • Created foods which never existed before (trans fats)
  • Improved methods of storing for longer shelf life --> improved access and availabilityto food (again easy access to calories)

Etc etc. Never before in human history has food been so abundant like it is today. It makes sense that humans are fat. For millions of years food was scarce, now, it's conveniently widely available. What about pet food? How many fat pets do you see?

But there is even more to it than that. The food supply in Japan could allow for obesity however instead obesity affects Westernised countries. Why? I don't know.

What I do know is that there have been discoveries regarding peers social facilitation of obesity. Eg: If you were fat, and concerned about body image, wouldn't it make sense to choose to hang out with fatter individuals, thus creating a situation where one can compare their self-worth to their peers and feel good about it?

Furthermore considering this, how quickly could you eat 1000 calories versus exercise 1000 calories? Apparently a McDonalds Cheeseburger is 300 calories, and I suspect a hungry human could eat four of them in about eight minutes. Running at 12km/hr for an hour might be about 1000 calories. So it is much much easier to put calories in than to take calories out.

Alcohol has a lot of calories and the drinks are usually laden with sugar. There's no calories in cannabis smoke so that must be the healthy option (lol).

Exercise is far more important than body fatness anyway. If you are metabolically healthy it is not a big deal if you have extra subcutaneous fat. It is far less healthy for a male to be obese than a female. Males are the ones who will die of a myocardial infarction.

One of my pet hates in life is when a fat dude complains to me about a fat women. Two reasons: 1 Hypocracy. 2. What's wrong with larger ladies amirite?

Certain types of foods can actually cause neurochemical changes in your brain that make you crave them more. Carbs for example can do that.

There are so many different factors for peoples obesity.

Can be food addiction, lack of self-control (my personal crux when it comes to food), or a number of medical issues.

Hell people never even seem to think about stuff like water weight/swelling. I work at a nursing home and I am not exaggerating when I tell you I have seen people with HUNDREDS OF POUNDS of water weight that they managed to shed as they got their condition under control.

But yeah, as also mentioned it is also a cruel way of life that it happens to be WAY easier to gain weight than it is to lose it. People who are lucky enough to NOT have weight issues seriously have NO IDEA how difficult weight loss is.

I dare someone who is healthy to go and switch to an UNHEALTHY lifestyle for a few weeks and then try to go back.

That and especially fatty foods stimulate opioid receptors.

Personally, most fast food just makes me feel awful though.

There are lots of biological factors that go into explaining why people can get obese. It's not simply a matter of people being lazy and having no will power. People who say that are as bad as the people who blame video games for all the troubles in the world.

We hear about food, but the problem is people also aren't active enough. Sitting on your ass everyday slows your metabolism and turns your blood into sludge.

Your non understanding of why is what is wrong. For some, maybe not you, this leads to degradation of the indiviuals involved. Sometimes there are medical reasons for the problems. I have a friend who suffers from just such a condition, which she got fixed, and has since lost all the weight. Another reason is because people have emotional problems and eating is the way they get over those problems. It is an escape just like drugs or alcohol is for others. Others have a genetic prediposition for it, as they do not have a high metabolism. There are many varying reasons for it. Chances are you are young. Therefor you probably have a fairly high metabolism that will fall drastically as you get older.

When I see obese people eat some kind of unhealthy / fatty food, I can't help the fact that they're eating their soul and life away. So in a way, I'm laughing inside at their disregard of life and humanity.

Christmas 2010, I weighed 270 lbs., all fat. It was due to a sedentary job and being away from home so long, so I had to eat out most of the time (and I only ate 1-2 meals a day). I ended up quitting and started working part-time as a farm-hand again and I'm down to 205 now.

It was, in my case, due to an extreme decrease in casual exercise and a switch from a relatively strenuous life as a farm-hand to a desk job I worked 12 hours a day. The fact I ate fast food almost every afternoon just hastened the inevitable. I go back to working as a farm-hand and eating grilled chicken most of the time, and my weight has gone back down to relatively normal levels.

Hatiko

i would suggest you educate yourself about how human body works and weight diseases before showing such a level of ignorance with dumb threads. Google is your friend.

Ignorance is not an excuse for this kind of threads.

They may go through a period of depression like I am in now and gain weight. I stopped exercising and eating and it caused me to gain weight! I need to get back on it though because I am getting fat. Bad eating habits, lack of exercise, depression, and bad genes can all lead to obesity.

When I was obese (about 260ilbs, 5'7) it wasn't because of a lack of self control, it was ENTIRELY because of what I ate everyday. Which was pretty much a ton of rice, bread and beans. Last year, after being obese for nearly my entire life, I dropped those things from my diet and stuck to meat and veggies, I dropped a ton of weight. I'm down to 150ilbs, I actually thought I gained weight during the holidays considering my food intake increased dramtically...nope, I actually lost 2 ilbs.

I don't even exercise btw, I utterly loath sweating.

But yea, rice, bread, and beans are a scourge in our society...especailly in hispanic culture. That's nearly all that we eat, sadly.

All people need to do is calculate their individual Calorie Maintenance Level - which factors in height, weight, gender and weekly exercise - and monitor/adjust their daily intakes accordingly. Calorie counting is actually surprisingly easy once you get in to the swing of it, so weight management - be it loss, gain or maintenance - is simple so long as you just apply yourself.

Well I used to be a 300 pound fatty. I lost 100 pounds in 2 years but I know how easy it could be to go back. I try to stay at 1800-2000 calories a day. Now that I count calories I see how fast 2-3 bowls of cereal can equal up to 1000 calories like its nothing. Or how 3 pieces of pizza is like 900 calories and I can eat like 8. I think becoming obese is so easy to do and once you start getting overweight, you stop caring, and when you stop caring you start eating more. Its a very vicious circle. I could easily go back to being overweight if I didnthave so much ambition.

Obesity is a sickness brought on by addiction. A food addiction is no different then an addiction to alcohol, gambling, drugs, or anything else to excess. The reason it is so rampant is that it generally goes unaddressed as a social issue. People just say "If you are fat then stop eating." But thats as irrational as saying "If you are addicted to pain killers, stop taking pain killers." Addicts need help outside of just, "stop doing what you're doing"Diablo-B

I don't even think it's the food so much as what people do (or don't do) between meals. Seriously, taking a car to check your mail...at the end of your drive? Spending 10 minutes trying to get a closer parking space when there's plenty open 5 or 6 rows back?

Most people hardly get any kind of physical activity, and most of those people actively go out of their way to avoid it.

[QUOTE="Hatiko"]

Krelian-co

i would suggest you educate yourself about how human body works and weight diseases before showing such a level of ignorance with dumb threads. Google is your friend.

Ignorance is not an excuse for this kind of threads.

Well, your so cool cause you called me ignorant. I'm actually getting real answers here from real people.

Lack of self control and a large unwillingness to have any respect for their body. Worst part is many demand respect for being gluttonous pigs and go on about how "it's genetics" and "not their fault" and "how they can be fat and healthy" and pretty much anything else the fat acceptance movement pulls out of their ass to justify why they are the way they are. They actually convince themselves that if they were to exercise and eat healthy that they would still be that fat, and they try to get others to believe that too which is the funny part. These are a group of people who make excuses for everything, which is partly why they are the way they are in the first place.

and I'm not even talking about the people who might be 20 or so pounds overweight either. I have nothing against those people. Not all of us have the time to dedicate to exercise and eating healthy while trying to put food on the table and keep up with work and school. I'm talking about the people who are massively overweight, those are the people I have no respect for at all because they have to eat an absurd amount of food to get that way, and it shows a complete lack of respect for themselves.

BumFluff122

I only eat 2 meals a day with 40 mins to an hour of excercise a day. IDK if my young fast metabolism has anything to do with that.

Stop drinking soft drinks and eating crappy processed food.

And no diet soft drinks are no better for you, the aspartame will actually make you gain weight.

Vickman178

Bro-science and a myth, it's not actually true. Every study done on aspartame shows it has no negative effects on weight loss, there is literally not one shroud of evidence that shows aspartame causes weight gain, or cancer or anything like that for that matter. The anti-aspartame crap is all fear mongering, and I can even tell you from experience that drinking large amounts of diet soda hasn't effected my cut one bit.

I think there was actually even a time when I was drinking 2-3 cans of diet soda a day and it still didn't have any negative effects on my cut. There are many studies you can find that show it has no effect on weight loss for other people as well, actually every study done on it shows that. Here is one of them: link
