[QUOTE="mattisgod01"]

They irritate people for a living and i'm not condoning insulting or verbally bullying but i'm all for wasting their time. What right do they have to call people up during dinner to sell them something they never asked for? When did that practice ever become exceptible. I have no sympathy for telemarketers, they should get a real job. If they don't like having their time wasted then they should just hang up, they called me after all.

MrGeezer

Here's the thing though...the most common complaints about telemarketers are that they are annoyances and that they are wasting peoples' time.

So...to go out of one's way just to annoy telemarketers and waste their time either reeks of hypocrisy, or indicates that the telemarketer really ISN'T wasting the customers' time. To actively spend MORE time trying to make a telemarketter feel bad is saying, "this person ISN'T wasting my time, since I have enough time to spend on insulting this telemarketter. However, I'm gonna waste his trime anyway, because **** that guy."

Again...they irritate people FOR A LIVING. As in, that's their JOB. That's what they do to feed their goddamn children and keep a roof over their heads. Meanwhile, customers irritate telemarketters FOR FUN. And yes...the second that you annoy the **** out of a person for ****s and giggles is the second that you start to look like a hypocrite when you justify your behavbiour by claiming that their behaviour is wrong.

They generally AREN'T annoying you for fun, it's out of necesssity. Instead, while you could easily just hang up the phone, you choose to annoy them just to make them feel bad. In both cases, we're dealing with annoyance. But one of the MOTIVES for annoyance is a hell of a lot more respectable than the other.

They called me first and just because a job exists doesn't mean it should exist. And yes they are wasting peoples time by calling and by then using my own time to waste their time is not hypocrisy. Its my time to waste. If the only justification for doing something was "I need the money" then society would be a real mess.

It's not your own time to waste, you're wasting THEIR time. They could be talking to someone who's actually interested in a sale, if you weren't keeping them on the phone toying with them.

And "they called me first"? Seriously? For most people, that stopped being an acceptable excuse right around first grade.

If they want to call me and discuss something then i'm happy to talk to them, but we can discuss what i want to discuss on my terms. If they don't like it they can hang up.

You know what i was taught in first grade? Not to prank call people. Atleast when people prank call they don't try to sell you something.

I don't even pick up if I'm the only one home, I'm not the one they're looking for.

If I do happen to answer, I'm not rude about it.

[QUOTE="mattisgod01"]The telephone was never intended to be a means for private companies to further their advertising campaigns but like all good inventions it all comes down to how much profit people can make out of it.

MrGeezer

And by extension, I'd wager that the telephone wasn't intended to be a means to allow people to verbally bully total strangers for the purpose of self-gratification.

The **** does it matter what X or Y was INTENDED to do? What matters is what people are DOING with it. The intentions behind the invention of the telephone have pretty much NOTHING to do with someone in 2011 treaing telemarketers like **** because he/.she gets a high off of being an ***.

i agree with what many of you are saying but when they're calling you at your home, then its game on, it seems like some sort of invasion of privacy when they repeatedly call you trying to sell you something.

You're kidding right? A jobs a job. It's a million times better than being on benefits or nothing at all. I have complete respect for someone who does this type of job because it's very hard. The irony is the people who don't listen and hang up are usually the ones who lose out on a good deal for something.

Here's what I do. I was watching the Roger Moore James Bond film "The Man With The Golden Gun" and during the big boat chase scene when the telemarketer called I told her to hold and pressed the speaker phone button and placed it next to the tv. I left it there for five minutes and when i checked back after that, the telemarketer had hung up. Another time I got a telemarketer, I answered in a calm feminine voice when answering and since I was in the kitchen I got an idea. After answering two questions, I started shrieking like a white trailer trash mom with banging on the oven door screaming "Leroy! Get your dirty *** out here! Your dog **** all over the couch!" My brother was in the living room on the couch and started shouting in a shrill child like voice "No Mommy! He won't **** on the couch anymore, honest! I's trains him real good, I szwears it!" The telemarketer hung up and probably tried to call child services. Another time, my brother answered it and put it on speaker phone and when the telemarketer lady said "Hello sir, how are you doing?" and he went "Ma'am I'm not doing so well, feel very down." and the lady was like "I'm sorry sir. I was calling yo..." at which point he interrupted and was said in a deep southern hick accent "Ya sees here, ma' daughter has been cheatin' on me with her broather an' I startin's to think her baby ain't mine! An' to top tha' off yar table top, the goarvearment's trien' to kick me off my lan'. Them polecats been mixin' up with tha' mongeeses." We heard a loud click after that.

How is it ok for them to call me and waste my time selling me some garbage i never asked for for a paycheck and increasing the profits of some company that probably outsources most of its jobs overseas anyway but not ok for me to talk to them about something that they never called me to talk about because somehow me wasting their time (which apparently is more precious then my free time away from work) is somehow bad? /end rant

Again, it's really hypocritical to complain that they waste your time, and then turn around and waste their time. Either way, you're wating your own time.

If they bother you so much, tell them to take you off their list and then hang up...

And on top of that, your issue should be with the company... The people telling them to make the calls. Being rude to the guy making minimum wage just to try and feed his family quite literally accomplished nothing.

If i was to say i'm not interested and just hang up then they would immediatly call someone else and annoy them. By keeping them on the phone as long as i can i am preventing them doing their job and costing the company money. I am sacrificing my time for a public service, you should be thanking me.

The ironic thing is that if i was to call the company and complain i would probably be on hold for hours and get know where. If everyone acted the same way as me then companies would stop using telemarketers and that would accomplish exaclty what i want. And i honestly don't care about the peoples reasons for doing the job, They know that people don't like dealing with telemarketers while having dinner (and thats not a cliche, thats when they do call as its when people are most likely to be at home) and yet they do the job anyway and you expect me to be sympathetic to their situation? Interupting people having dinner in order to sell them something they never asked for is rude, Regardless of what the company they work for requires them to do at the end of the day they are still the ones doing it.

No, I'm not going to thank you because I am fully capable of either

A) No answering the phone; or

B) Saying no, hanging up and being done with them in less than 20 seconds.

Yes, they do the job any way. And if that was your only means of income, you would do the job too. Yeah, the job sucks, and yes, telemarketers can be annoying, but that still doesn't explain why any one should be rude to them

Is them living on welfare at your (the taxpayer's) expense really a better alternative?

I've worked part time at a telemarketing company before. It's really not fun and I had to put up with a lot of nonsense. I just don't answer the phone, I always felt getting an answering machine was the most satisfying.

I've also been a telemarketer, for a whole year ringing people everyday trying to get them to switch their power company. It's really not fun and I was fired because of my poor sales..lol. Never again..but there are some people who make really good livings out of it, you just have to be a natural born seller...which I'm clearly not. xD

Like credit card insurance or a more expensive cellphone plan? The only things I've ever been offered are costlier versions of something I already have or something I have absolutely no need for.

mattisgod01

No, you are not doing a public service. While the vast majority are annoying, every once in awhile a good deal comes out of it. A few months ago I was actually offered a good deal on homeowner's insurance from a phone call. Some of them are paid on commission, so by you wasting 20 minutes of their time you're taking food off of their table by preventing them from making a sale. One calls me while I'm playing Black Ops or working out I kindly say I'm not interested and hang up. I'm not going to wast 20 minutes of my time just to piss them off.

One thing people don't realise is that companies are fully aware that doing the same thing over and over again hoping for a different result is insane if nothing every came out of it. If telemarketers never, ever, ever got a sale based on phone calls they would just stop making phone calls. In my work as a recruiter I had to call several high school seniors to get appointments that would eventually turn into an enlistment. I might have to call 100 seniors to get 20 qualified people to agree to an appointment to get ten to take the ASVAB to get two to enlist.

If I constantly called 100 seniors and got zero appointments there would be no purpose to make calls. Same thing with telemarketers, they call 100 people and out of that hundred if they get zero sales it's not worth their time. On the other hand, if out of 100 phone calls they sell their product to five people then it's worth their time and they will continue to do it. Telemarketing may go the way of the dinosaur soon since less people are on the phone and more are on social webpages. All of those ads you get on your Facebook are just telemarketing in the 21st century.

If you are like me and are habitually dodging bill collectors you really don't even hear the phone ring anymore. It could be a telemarketer, it could be a bill collector, hell it could even be someone calling to tell me a family member died. I wouldn't know because i don't even get up to look anymore due to it usually being someone to whom i owe money.

I am on the do not call list and don't get many telemarketer calls but I do get some calls from numbers I do not know and I just do not answer the phone. There is one time Bennett Research called and I told them that I was on the do not call list and I would sue them if they called me again (after repeatedly calling and me not answering the phone).

The irony is the people who don't listen and hang up are usually the ones who lose out on a good deal for something.

MushroomWig

That's a lie.

You would be surprised, for every ten that offer you crap one might actually have a good deal to offer.

They normally ask to talk to a dead relative. So I just say, they are dead, but they are so persistent. Some of them get pretty rude. So, you all defending these guys, I say hell no. It's war.

[QUOTE="BuryMe"]

[QUOTE="mattisgod01"]

Like is said earlier, just becuase a job exists doesn't mean it should exist.

mattisgod01

And just because you can be rude to some one who is harmlessly doing their job doesn't mean you should be.

/end rant

Because generally speaking, you're pranking them while they aren't pranking you.

Their job is in sales. So they're generally not gonna do some **** like sitting there for 10 minutes talking about something else, only to then say "haha, this is really a sales call. Gotcha!" You can generally tell that the call is a waste of time within about the first minute, and then flat-out hang up the phone if you aren't interested. Contrary to belief, telemarketers generally aren't rubbing their hands in glee saying "hahaha, now I get to waste peoples' time." See...it's a JOB. They're making money on SALES, so they clearly aren't usually going to spend excessive amounts of YOUR time when they already know that you're not interested.

By contrast, people who prank telemarketters ARE pretty much solely interested in pissing off another person. That's really the only reason to do it. And the caller often CAN'T hang up, particularly when the person doing the pranking is spending 10 minutes pretending to be interested just in order to shatter the caller's hopes of making a sale.

They want to waste as little of your time as possible, because that's also THEIR time. Time that they could be spending making sales to people who are actually interested. They generally AREN'T trying to be jerks to other people, while that's pretty much PRECICELY what you are trying to do. THAT is why there's something "wrong" with your method.

I mean...how freaking hard is it to just say no? If I'm at Best Buy looking for a flash drive and one of the salesmen comes up asking me if I'm interested in a TV, I simply say "no". I sure as hell don't pretend that I'm interested and talk about TVs with him for 15 minutes just so I can finally say, "haha...**** you, buddy! I never wanted a TV in the first place, I was just pretending to be interested so that I could waste your time." If someone calls me at home trying to sell me some ****, I simply say "no". If they persist, I tell them not to call me again, and then I hang up. Takes all of about 15 seconds, and it's sure as hell not difficult to do.

If i was to say i'm not interested and just hang up then they would immediatly call someone else and annoy them. By keeping them on the phone as long as i can i am preventing them doing their job and costing the company money. I am sacrificing my time for a public service, you should be thanking me.

mattisgod01

Sure they'd call someone else. That person also might want the product/service and be willing to pay for it.

YOU might not want what they are selling, but chances are that SOMEONE does. Again, we're talking about business here. If there were NO willful and satisfied customers found using these methods, then companies wouldn't hire people to do that ****.

Again, what the hell?! Do you seriously think that the whole point of this stuff is to annoy people just for the hell of it? These are BUSINESSES that hire EMPLOYEES to do that stuff. They're concerned with MONEY. And if they weren't making sales, then these jobs wouldn't exist. Surely SOMEONE wants what they're selling, so don't even try to act like you're doing some kind of public service.

I tell them I'm not interested and hang up.
