It randomly came up in discussion, about science, sciencetist who say pray works, vs sciencetist who say medicine etc works not pray.

anyways, i was baffled when someone near to me, let's say my dad, say's the world is 6000, and basically calls the millions and billions of years of fossils etc is just a hocus pocus, that dinosaurs died in the flood.

i'm still confused, that the bible would fail to mention something like the things we seen jurassic park or any museum.

also that the grand canyon, and the earth mt everest etc etc, everything is shaped after the great flood

i don't know how to discuss this anymore, but i have a strong feeling to just leave it there, and this alters my view on him lol

now i kinda wonder why they reach for advil etc instead of just praying away the pain...

I have had this discussion many many times over the Internet and with other people in my life. I am a Christian and believe the Earth is much, much older than 6000 years. I do respect their view though and I just have a different view on the topic.

There will always be wackos around, but majority of Christians don't believe that. Heck, the most widespread christian group is catholic church and many decades ago pope recognized evolution as absolute fact.

I'm a christian but i don't believe all the crap that the bible teaches us. The problem with being curious, intelligent and aware we often don't like to believe that things can happen because they can. Humans are a result of millions of years of evolution, not a grand design of pre determined origin. The evidence that supports the earth's age and everything that has evolved on this planet far out ways anything the bible or any scripture may say.

Considering what we know about our own universe and how things are the way they are, there is just no way earth and life can exist just in that time frame only. The universe was not created just for us, we are most likely not the only intelligent beings in the endless expanse of space. If you consider the Drake's Equation to be a plausible tool for calculating intelligent civilizations in our galaxy and beyond, then you would know that it is impossible for humans/us to be the only intelligent things out there. You would have to be quite ignorant.

Furthermore the chances of other intelligent beings that evolved before us are high. How would deeply religious people feel if they knew that life was just a roll of the dice, and that out there in space there are beings who were here before us and are infinitely more intelligent than us. We would feel insignificant, small and vulnerable. Religion is what people need to believe to make their lives feel safe, to keep their emotions in balance and to determine how their lives should be led. Anything that doesn't flow with what their religion teaches them they automatically shut off all reasoning and acceptance from their existence.

There's a lot more i could say on the matter but i would be here forever. I'm not bagging religion and peoples beliefs, i just feel that religion and everything else can work in harmony. Religion is a good way to understand ourselves and our emotions but it isn't the meaning of life.

Science & Religion only clash if either proponent has a closed mind. For instance have you ever considered over the course of time the planets were not the same distance from the sun as now and thus a year (the time it takes for Earth to orbit the sun) would be or could be much longer. Therefore measuring with our perception of a year now versus a year then would be flawed. I grew up with Science telling us that there was a Big Bang and the planets were and always had been getting further from the Sun. Now they say they can prove the opposite and we are and always have been getting closer and that mass formed due to implosion. Which by the way would bolster years being longer in the past. But as Science has went back and forth in my life on everything from this to telling me not to eat eggs they're bad, eat eggs they're good, and the like, The Bible has never changed. This is the Wisdom and Faith of your father I'm sure.

You better read the last page of the Bible as a Warning. Especially before calling a word of it crapp. It says it is perfect in it's works and warns add not a word to it nor take not a word from it or he will strike your name from the book of life which was written before the foundations of time.

Crystal-Rush

I wonder how a Christian can demean the bible like that, or say religion isn't the meaning of life.

I also disagree that people "need religion to make their lives feel safe, keep their emotions in check and determine how their lives should be led". I agree that religion can do these things, but suggest there are far more rational (and less contradictory) ways of feeling safe, checking emotion and gaining moral guidance than believing in a faith.

Ignorance has no limits...

I have tried to put some sense into a guy who pretty much thought the same, useless waste of time!! He said evolutionary theory has been dismissed a long time ago already, and that I'm an idiotl to believe it. When I mentioned dinosaurs he said they were made up by some atheist cult and no such creatures ever existed. So anyway, learn to let go and forget. You know what they say "Ignorance is bliss." Let him live in his magic bubble and wear pink glasses.

I've never heard of planets in our own solar system moving away from our sun. I thought it was the expansion of space moving the galaxies away from each other. As far as I'm aware the grip that the sun has on it's orbiting bodies is just far too strong. Sure the orbits the planets in our solar system will change over time but they wont escape our sun's gravity unless there was a cataclysmic disaster. The sun controls the fate of the solar system, and for the 4-5 billion years that it has left it will continue to control the destiny of our solar system.

Isn't the Sun loosing mass by burning?

The sun burns off layers of elements from lightest to heaviest. Right now our sun is burning through Hydrogen, which is the lightest element in the universe. It has one proton and one electron, any smaller and it wouldn't be anything at all. Then after is goes through heavier elements. Every second our sun loses 4.289x10^12 g or about 4 million metric tons but as it burns, the mass of it's own weight is constantly pushing onto itself. By the time our star becomes a neutron star it will be about the size of earth but due to gravitational forces it will weigh relatively the same. Any mass that it did loose would hardly effect the influence of orbiting planets

mryahia

Somehwere beetween 2 million and 100 million it's impossile to put forward an accurate number.

I fail to see how that relates to the origonal point you brought up tho, as It's documented other animal engage in homosexualiy. Theres also the fact the vast majority of the worlds species are one cell organsims who re produce without the need for any partner.

On topic: As a Geologist and Archeologist anyone who says the world is 6000 years old I would either just not bother as a generaly find there to biased or lack the intellegence to grasp the basic principles of why it can't be 6000 years old, or chuckle to myself gently untill they say 'What?' and procede to explain in it's full scientific detail.

Some people enjoy that. I know you have your opinion, but outright disrespecting peoples choice is just wrong. We accept them because it's what they do in their personal life, it's not like we all watch them do their thing.
