I would lol. Even if you are religious, I don't think you are supposed to believe that the world is 6000 years old. No Abrahamic religion has any speculations about when Adam and Eve were created.

Very slowly, and I would avoid any sudden movements until I was at a safe distance :P,

Seriously though how can people ignore so much evidence around them this way?

To anyone saying "respect the persons opinion"....NO! Saying CoD: Black Ops sucks is an opinion. Thinking Spider-Man is the greatest movie ever is an opinion. Thinking the earth is 6000 years old is not an opinion, it's ignorance. Ignoring a mountain of scientific evidence just so you can be "right" doesn't mean you have a different opinion, it makes you wrong.

The oh so wise comedian Lewis Black said it best "Their are people out there today that are watching the Flintstones as if it were a real life documentary. When I meet these people I hold up a fossel and say "fossel!" and if they still don't get it, I throw it just over their head."

Fact is their are more Athiests in the USA than their are African Americans. Yet look at all the changes and differences Black Activist groups can make. Athiests are the single largest "minority" in the United States. Yet their is no voice for them because most of them have this attitude that it is okay to tolerate the ignorance of others because it's on the subject of religion.

I'd acknowledge his opinion, but I wouldn't respect it.

I'd ignore his opinion, and I would subsequently disrespect him.

That's more like it.

Actually, that is incorrect. By subsequently disrespecting him, you are not ignoring his opinion.

I don't know a lot of Christians that believe the world is only 6000 years old. Maybe there are, but I doubt a lot of them do. The Jewish calendar dates 6000 years back and their calendar starts from the Creation. So it would be more likely that a Jewish person would believe something like that. In any case, I'm Christian, I believe in God, and I believe evolution is correct. The idea that they can't co-exist is a result of people being misinformed.

I agree,God (the creator) Made all things with the ability to progress, and change to there fitting.very simple laws really, adapt, and progress. But like most scientist, they make claims with no real facts, and try there best to get them in books,so they can be remembered as the guy who discovered it lol.its all just a game of popularity.

I would assume that their faith to a religion is more important to them then what science is trying to prove. They believe in the inerrancy of Scripture. In the end, does any of this really matter? It's like arguing about how much a Big Mac had cost 15 years ago. People who believe that the Earth is 6000 - 10000 years old are just as capable of functioning in society as people who believe in the Flat Earth Theory. I actually find it quite funny that atheists (who tend to complain about religious people foisting their beliefs on them) are generally the ones who are foisting their ideas about how old the Earth is to those who don't hold similar beliefs.

If someone believed that 2 + 2 = 5, does that mean we should accept that his beliefs differ from ours?

Religious beliefs or personal opinions are one things, but people who dispute basic scientific facts like the age of the Earth are just likely not very well educated in the sciences and are demonstratably wrong.

it's not an opinion though. you can't have an opinion about something that deals with being a fact or not. saying "in my opinion, the world is only 6000 years old" is like saying "in my opinion, 2+2=5" it's not an opinion, it's either wrong or right. in that case, he's just WRONG.

I typically don't respond to them, I nod condescendingly and then walk away. I think I have a pretty good gage of if people are actually going to listen to reasonable arguments or if they're just going to try and support their dogma, and if they're the latter I'll typically tell them why they're wrong in an abbreviated manner and then when they start spouting dogma just walk away,

As an old-earth creationist I would probably argue that the bible speaks in symbolism all the time. Who knows what a day is to a God who exists outside of time? I think the creation story was written to give humans (who can only think within the constrains of time) an understandable metaphor for the beginning. Also in Genesis 1 the bible says "And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so." Let the earth bring forth? What does that sound like? Possibly evolution? I don't profess to know what happened, or really think it matters that much, but to say that modern science and Christianity are mutually exclusive is silly.

I'm still attempting to determine if the number we assign to the earths age is important. After I figure that out, I'll let you know what I think about anyone who has currently assigned such a value.

I'm a Christian, and I have no problem believing that the world is much older than 6000 years.
