Is it World war two, or world war the second?
I say this because today I said "World war two" and the teacher told me "not like this, its world war the second".

Two. I've never heard "the second".
Edit - I mean "World War the Second", though I have heard "The Second World War".
"World War The Second" ?? :? That's utterly wrong.
It's either "World War Two", or "The Second World War".
look at this ****, another idiot who thinks she is better than me because she is the teacher :xGazaAliYou should teach her a thing or two...in bed. :x

Your teacher is just being a picky ****. Either is fine, but I prefer World War Two.You only say "the second" or some other number if you are referring to a person. For example, you say "King George the Second" for "King George II."Is it World war two, or world war the second?

Ones that I've used more than once:
World War Two (most often)
The Second World War (when I feel I've used World War Two too many times in a given paragraph)
The Second Great War (when bein' oldschool)
[QUOTE="broken_bass_bin"]Is "King Henry the Eighth wrong? Or should it be The Eighth King Henry?"World War The Second" ?? :? That's utterly wrong.
It's either "World War Two", or "The Second World War".

That's different. You only use Roman numerals like that when placed after a person's name as a suffix.
"King Henry The Eighth" isn't his actual name, that's just his title. The 'VIII' is a suffix, so you say it after his name.
"World War Two" is the actual name given to the war. The 'II' here is not used as a suffix, it's just another way of saying "two".

this...and your teacher is stupid. end thread. At some point your teacher was probably reprimanded herself for calling Henry the Eighth 'The Eight Henry', resulting her incorrect assumption about WWII. Unfortunately this rule does not apply to all things that have a VIII attached, or a II or two in this case. As has been covered in this thread already, the correct terms are:
WWII - World War Two or the Second World War
Henry II - King Henry the Second.
Try not to berate her too much for her mistakes - nobody's perfect - and politely pointing out that you're right is so much more satisfying than stooping to her level and being petty about it :P
World war two. Never heard it as world war the second.
Probably a mistake. Correct ur teacher and be a smart ass. :P

If I had to guess this is what probably made your teacher think that.

Well a children's librarian isn't far removed from a teacher I suppose  But I do stand by what I said, the English language is a strange and complex thing, making a mistake doesn't necessarily mean that she isn't a good teacher. Please Log In to post.
