5 years ago i was scared of hearing System of a Down when my mom was around, because she didn't like it. Now i blast melodeath like it's nothing on my stereo. I still listen to alot of music, not only metal, so it's okay, i mostly progressed from "maisntream" bands to less known ones.

(but she still dosn't like it)

Mine has. Growing up I was a total metal head. Now that I'm older and out of college, I almost never listen to metal anymore and listen to mainly classic rock and country. :)

2-3 years ago I was listening to Slipknot and Trivium. Now I listen to real metal, good metalcore, good rap, good rock, I acknowledged Led Zeppelin as being awesome and overcame the idea that "older music sucks" and lately I've been listening to some jazz :D

Alot, I used to listen to nothing but rap and hiphop. Slowly started hating it. :P Listened to rock and classic rock for a while, and got into metal (starting with classic and power). Now I listen to pretty much every genre of metal except drone/doom. :) (Some underground hiphop I can still appreciate)

I said the same thing a couple years ago after 20 years of metal. Now I can only stand a few of the really big metal bands like Pantera and Metallica and whatnot.

I used to love country. Then (When I was in 6th grade)I listened to only 3 bands: Bon Jovi, ALdo Nova, and Rush. Now I've moved to more 80's stuff, now I'm really big into symphonic metal/rock (TSO and Nightwish mainly) with all my other stuff thrown in.

I think a large portion of metal fans get their start that way:P

I was introduced to Blink 182 and Green Day when i was 10-12 by my cousin. (Which you could describe as a poser) i then explored to some Spanish bands (Mago de Oz, Angeles del Infierno, Soda Stereo) then i staarted to get into more "heavy" things (System of a Down, post-Black Album Metallica, Linkin Park) then, with the help of our glorious internet i managed to find myself where i am now (Dream Theater, Stolen Babies, Arcturus, Nevermore, Tool, Megadeth, Children of Bodom). And it only keeps growing and growing. Then i started to listen to more ****c rock and 70s-80's Bowie, Dylan, and some softer stuff.

I think pretty much everyone gets his influence from a cousin or brother or dad. Then you eventually find your way. Really interesting :3

What happened to my cousin?

He's about to debut his first album =P

As a kid, I listened to anything that was popular on radios. A lot of 90's alt rock, grunge, rap and pop. Around 14 I started getting into older rock and roll and been mostly into that ever since

I grew up listening to alot of my dads jazz fusion records; artists such as Jack Bruce, War, Santana, and Isis. That definatly opened me up to most other genres of rock, jazz, and R&B. Throughout highschool some of my faves were Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, Sam Cook, and B.B. King (I also really liked modern R&b at the time like Alicia Keys, and R. Kelly). Nowdays, I'm into some heavier, progressive jazzy stuff like Tool, The Mars Volta, and Meshuggah

Nothin wrong with that. Chocolate Starfish wasn't a bad album, and Get Rich Or Die Tryin' is probably one of the best rap albums this decade. LP and Korn suck, though, and so does 50's new album

I've progressively leaned farther and farther away from pop music, and more towards classical, musical theatre, opera, and academic music. And it's made me snobby.

I don't like frenzy guitar music, where a guitarist is going off on one to make out they are the next big thing. This changed because when I was a teen I used to like frenzy guitar music. It just don't do anything for me.

Find it difficult to find a modern Gothic rock or pure metal band I like now. I keep searching.

I never understand why people dismiss the bands they listened to as they were kids. I listened to Slipknot when I was like 12 and, although I basically never listen to them now, they were an important part of shaping my musical tastes. My tastes have changed drastically and not at all. In my car, I have one of the first CDs I ever bought, blink - 182's "Take off Your Pants and Jacket" but I am listening to a metalcore band while I line up a drum and bass song to listen to next. I like to think my tastes have matured but I love the things I listened to a kid, reminds me of better times... :P

They haven't so much changed as much as they've come into existence. Up until about ages 19 or 20, I viewed music largely just as a distraction, something to be put on to fill an aural gap, but whose nature I didn't really care that much about. But then I discovered bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Alice in Chains, and others, and all of a sudden I had music I actually cared about on a level deeper than just that it breaks the silence.

And since then I've become something akin to a music snob; I won't listen to just any song. :P

so you hated pretty much all thrash minus the first 2 years? so you hated peace sells, rust in peace, anything by sepultura, almost all of kreator, .. aka pretty much anything but the first 1-2 albums from all the first wave of thrash metal bands?

I use to dislike Metal and basically anything with a guitar and listen to all rap and stuuf (I blame Midnight Club 3) and then I started listening to my friends music and playing GH 2 and started to like it a lot. Then I learned how to download music for free and just decided to get some System of a Down songs because that was one band I rememberd my friend showed me and now they are my favorite artist. I don't really listen to rap any more, just occasionally.
