Yeah, I read it. My girlfriend is a Christian and I go to Fellowship every Friday night with her. It's a really eye-opening and interesting experience for me, and I think the lessons that the Bible teachers are invaluable. But, I'm still an Athiest nonetheless. I'm still open to the possibility of a God...but can't wrap my head around believing such a concept. It just seems too man made. Like, it's human nature to want a reward for suffering, so why not create a religion with salvation for everyone's suffering? You know what I mean? Sorry, I don't want to give you a novel....

So your Athiest ? Details please.

I've got enough law from our government preventing me from doing as I please. Adding more restrictions from a 2000 year old fictional tale on top of what the government has already laid down is not my cup of tea. A boat with 2 of every animal a garden of eden talking, flaming bushes magic tablets gimme a break. Accept that you are nothing more than the very decaying material in your trash can and nothing more.

I was raised as a Christian and even attended a private religious school when I was younger and thus ended up reading the bible many times over. It was only later in life that I became an Athiest and it's been awhile so I am admittingly a little rusty on exact passages and all that. Luckily I have some good friends some of who are nuns, religious scholars and priests so I always have then to turn to in order to confirm exact content.

I don't think Agnostic is the word. I'm pretty sure a God doesn't exist in my own mind, but I'm not gonna be POSITIVE because I really can't prove it either way. No one can, so what's the point of arguing either side? Anyway, it seems that the most religious kinds of people are people in minorities or that are less wealthy because it gives them something to hope for. Whether heaven is true or not, it's human nature to hope for that rainbow to appear after all that rain. It's the people that have the toughest lives that believe in God most. And I really appreciate what religion does for them. It makes them happier, more content people because they have something to look forward to. I wish I believed in it...but the strictly rational and logical part of my brain is telling me no.

I apologize. I typed that silly message out before I saw that you stated that English was not your first language. Ellipses are these fellows little series of dots "..." that you were using liberally in your message. Many people are guilty of overusing them instead of proper punctuation (myself included) and I was just being silly when I saw that you used them to separate every word you typed. I was just being silly, sorry for the confusion.

I've read bits and pieces of the bible.

What exactly does reading the bible have to do with being an atheist?  Someone can come to the conclusion that they don't believe in a god or gods without having read the bible.

No, it wouldn't be hypocritical.

The idea of god is not limited to just Christianity.  You don't need to read religious scripture in order to come to the reasonable conclusion that the idea of god is an illogical belief.

Well yeah, but it's a borefest. Some people think that if people just read the bible they'll be convinced it's true. I'm just utterly disgusted at what's in there, the sexism, random killing, slavery, rape, murder. It's not even fun because people use that at weddings or at court.

That's true in general. But for me,being raised a Catholic,to just abandon the religion I was born to without studying both sides of the argument would go against everything I believe in.

That's true in general. But for me,being raised a Catholic,to just abandon the religion I was born to without studying both sides of the argument would go against everything I believe in.DaveMcSavage

I'm not saying you shouldn't study both sides of the argument.  To blindly accept atheism is just as bad as blindly excepting theism.  The point I was trying to make is that the bible is only a single source from a single religion.  The idea of god can be studied and decided upon without reading scripture.

Oh,I understand and agree completely with your point, what I was trying to say was that it would have felt hypocritical TO ME to make that decision without reading The Bible...I'm sure it wouldn't feel that way to others.
