I use it all the time and I hear it frequently since I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I always found it interesting how the phrase is mainly a NorCal thing lol.

I never thought about it, but I probably say it more often than I think I do. Think of it as the Bay Area version of "wicked."
"Hella" never really took off in Chicago. At least not from the part i'm from. Calling things "sick" to express its awesomeness is the most frequently used, out-of-place adjective i can think of around here.

"Hella" is short for "hell of a" as in for example "we had a hella fun time" vs. "we had a hell of a fun time."Hella? What's that supposted to mean? Sounds hebrew to me...
