[QUOTE="MgamerBD"][QUOTE="Wilfred_Owen"] Nothing turns out that simple. They'll be some screaming. Maybe a scoop of ice cream thrown. I don't know.KeitekeTokage
I hope that is sarcasm. Anyway people in OT act like people care you are atheist... If I told my mom. She would say "ok, its your decision. I respect it" Then I'll live on with my life. Its not like I'm announcing I'm gay or dying...

And yet you still willingly clicked on the thread, read through it, and made several responses.

Yeah...this is OT...herp derp

Why exactly do you have to tell her? If it dosn't change anything then there's no reason to.

only those that feel the need to parade it in front of others, and that would be """nonconformists""" notice the extra quotation marks for extra poser status

Why make it an event? It's not a big deal. If she ever asks, tell the truth. Simple as that. Go on with your life.

I don't see the point of going through the theatrics. It's not like you're announcing a baby or engagement...

KeitekeTokage

For some people it is a pretty big deal though.

thats the thing.

It really depends on how important you think this is. If you consider being an Atheist an important part of your life, maybe you should tell her.

Um..don't?

Seriously, you're making this sound like you're trying to come out of the closet or something.

Most people know that religion is crap anyway. I don't think she'll care.

Most people believe strongly in what you call "crap". Get off your high horse. If his family is devout then it's a big deal.

You don't know anything about his family to make such a statement. His family might be devout and wishes for their son to be a good follower of whatever faith they pratice.

That does not change my opinion...If people allow themeselves to judge others by their faith, they are not worth much IMO (i see i have to make that clear)

So....I've set up a lunch with my mom and have already made it clear that I want to discuss religion with her. I plan on telling her for the first time that I'm an atheist. About a month or so ago over lunch she asked me if I was agnostic, which shocked me because I never told her anything of the such (must have been careless somewhere on fb with a post). She didn't seem too devestated about that, just a bit upset perhaps a little more. The only thing she said to me was "I think you think that God judges people, and he doesn't judge people". One of her colleagues that's above her in ranking walked into the resturaunt at that moment and sat at the table next to us, and they began to have a conversation. I didn't want to talk about such a thing around her colleague not knowing how he may react so the conversation ended there. So now I've decided to set up lunch again and I plan on telling her this time. How exactly should I construct this conversatin OT?

Oh and she's Christian btw, my whole family is and I'm 20 yrs old and going to college (which she pays for) if that's at all relevant.

KeitekeTokage

why would you tell her? just lie about it and let her have some peace of mind like i do with my parents.

it's not like lying about it will send you to hell.

there is not one way in which this is a good idea or improves anyones existence.

Just tell her that you think the structure of organized religion goes against your concept of faith. That way you can leave it open to the idea that you believe in something, yet you don't wish to follow the decrepit dogma of mankind that blinds so many people.

I just shake my head when I read things like this. Just because people don't believe in God, or religion, doesn't mean they have no morals or principles.

YOU: "mom, I have something to tell you. You may not like it, but i'm talking to you as an adult and i would like you to take what i say seriously. I have been having some problems with my faith over the past X number of years for many reasons which i do not care to go into, however, I have come to the conclusion that I no longer believe in god; I have decided to become an Athiest. This does not make me abnormal or a nasty person, i simply do not have the same beliefs as you do and i hope it will not affect our relationship in any negative way."

^^^something like that?

Yup.

I love it when christians preach equality and unity and then judge every other religion because of their beliefs... Most even go as far as to hate every other religion for no reason. That's called racism you all forgiving christians. Get off your high horse and see that not everyone needs to follow you and your god. We all have our own beliefs. Some of us even mix God with science.

rzepak is right. Anybody preaching religion then bashing everyone else not part of it is not worth much. The way I see it it's a one way ticket to their version of hell.

It's pretty clear why people are worried about admitting that they are Atheist. A University study concluded that Atheists are the most distrusted minority over in the USA.

Either way, just present the fact to her. If she is a loving Mother who isn't an ignorant bigot, she won't disown or frown upon you. If she has a very negative reaction, and things really go down hill, then she doesn't sound like a parent worthy of any respect.
