Boyfriend/Girlfriend - this is the norm but it doesn't seem fitting for adults... it seems kind of juvenile.
Lover - romantic but imo too explicit. The phrase "this is my lover" seems to call to mind the image of the two people having sex. It's also kind of dated.
Partner, companion, significant other - too official / unromantic.
Mate - too Darwinian / British.
I mean of course they're just words but none of them feel right.
I can tolerate the words boyfriend/girlfriend myself but my girlfriend seems particularly discontent -she just suggested earlier today that I refer to her as to as an "adult female with whom I am engaged in a committed romantic relationship."
