For the last couple of days I've been trying to learn 21 Guns by Green Day and a large portion of the song is played with bar chords. I've been practicing these chords for awhile now but everytime I try I'm always muting at least one string. I can do this song quite easily on my friend's electric but I'm having problems on my acoustic. My finger is starting to hurt quite a bit as well from practicing. Anybody have suggestions on how to improve my bar chords?

There isn't anything more you can do but practice. You are turning your finger, right? Try it on an electric for a bit.

Don't press down too hard, only the strings you intend to strum. Let the flesh of you fingers mute the strings you don't want.

I'm not turning my finger, it ends up muting the strings.

You should be aiming to position your finger as straight as you can as opposed to leaning as hard as you can. You still have to apply a fair amount of pressure with your finger to the fretboard, but a flat, straight finger is the key. Practise simply barring a whole fret and once you can do this without muting any of the strings, add the rest of chord shape.

It hurts because your not used to it, as you keep practicing it will get easier and easier.. Not sure why I helped you when your trying to play stupid green day though. Try some good music, haha no jk we have different tastes and thats cool, but hopefully you will grow out of your greenday phase.

Practice is what you need to do. I remeber trying to play bar chords on my acoustic, and now 8 months later I can play them without any trouble.

first look at your palm close up. See the finger prints on your fingers. Quickly hit your knuckles hard with your other hand

It helps to slant your fretting finger a bit (assuming your using an open tuning).

You do it exactly the same way you do it on any other guitar.

Just keep practicing. Bar chords are frustrating for beginners, but keep at it and you'll get it eventually.
