No, drowning is like getting shot. It often RESULTS in death, but the death is a separate thing from the getting shot/drowning.

You simply do not have to have died to have drowned.

According to the dictionary, to drown means to "to die under water or other liquid of suffocation" when used as a verb, or "to kill by submerging under water or other liquid" when used as a verb with and object.

Then your dictionary sucks, and can go to hell. Because people HAVE drowned and lived to tell about it, and we still lack the ability to bring the dead back to life.

Sorry, but your dictionary is wrong.

My dictionary is dictionary.com, and the one I have at home says the same thing. With that being said, I'd have to disagree with you, unless I can get another definition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drowned

I would rather side with this definition.

"Drowningisdeathfrom suffocation (asphyxia) caused by a liquid entering the lungs and preventing the absorption of oxygen leading to cerebralhypoxiaandmyocardial infarction."

This is what I think you are talking about: "Near drowningis the survival of a drowning event involving unconsciousness or water inhalation and can lead to serious secondary complications, including death, after the event."

Yes, I am aware that wikipedia is stupid and unreliable. Thanks for reminding me.

I was expecting that response, actually. Wikipedia is the more credible source regarding this matter I'm sure anyone else reading this will agree.

If you are not breathing and your heart has stopped you are by definition dead. That doesn't mean that you have to stay dead, but you are technically dead at that moment.

No, death occurs when the brain has died.

Granted, the legal definitions probably vary by country. I have little doubt that there are places where you are legally dead if you don't move when someone pokes you with a stick.

I'm actually quite sure its when the heart stops beating. My brain dies every day during my Principles of Business class. :D

Drown: 1. (intransitive) To be suffocated in water or other fluid; to perish by such suffocation. Once dead, all mental nervous connections cease to function. You can't do anything, let alone prevent an event that already occurred.

Try to grab onto the walls? Scream? If you're ever being swept away by the tide while swimming in the sea, then DO NOT try to swim against the current. It will always win, and you'll just be left with no energy.

I have a friend who died in a river by drowning in a whirlpool.

You are not supposed to struggle when drowning in a whirl pool. You save your energy and try to curl up in a ball. o_o

say no ones around and your alone in a pool. you drown for some reason, how do you save yourself?sofakingfat
The way you asked the question, I think the only answer is, "impossible". Doesn't drown mean "to suffocate by submersion especially in water"? I guess you could rise from the grave and go after vengeance. Maybe go after whoever pushed you in, or if no one did and you don't want to take responsibility for the incident, you could go after the contractor that built the pool or the company that designed the pool. Or you could do it the American way and sue even if the defendants were in the right. Then again, I don't know that zombies have any legal standing in the system of laws.
