dont worry america, your still nr.1

__Chris__

And yet more people still want to go to the USA than "insert whatever other country"

Have you even been to the United States? Just because some chart has 9 negative things on it, this makes the US some god awful country?

I have and I know that it doesn't... which is why I said more people still want to go the USA than "insert whatever country".

Gang related crime in big cities should not be representative of the entire country.

China might very well get a leg up on the US, and sustain that lead for a number of years or even a few decades. But it will inevitably collapse on itself in a short timespan if what we've seen is any indication.

It's the "I want to be part of the empire syndrome". Happened to Rome too. There's a perception, among the general population, that just being part of the empire is better than staying in their country. In some cases that's true but in many others that's actually not true. Funnily enough if those people are in worse situation in their new home than before they still think they are better off where they are now, it is part of what is popularly called cognitive dissonance which we all suffer in part, although some more than others, and which allows us to deceive ourselves pretty efficiently.

please dont change this into a pointless argument about the USA.

You would post proof that the numbers really are correct, and that people would love to live in the USA.

I would post numbers showing that America is still nr. 1 on some of these negative aspects.

ect.

it wouldn't lead anywhere. It was a joke. Dont be too defensive.

No I clearly said that for many people it is better but for many don't, like in any country. Either way using the desire for citizenship status of the perceived empire at a time to prove how much better it is is misleading since this kind of phenomenon is very real, I'm not making things up.

well at their current rate of growth they will surpass the US unless of course they stop growing for some reason.

Well you can't blame people for thinking that way since we have our share of examples in history where those in power didn't handle it well (just look at Nazi Germany for a recent one). Specially if the decadence involves a drop in the overall standard of living of a population that is used to a high standard and are kind of obssesed with being number 1 in everything. Hopefully your leaders will know how to handle the new reality, I think an administration like Obama will handle it better than an administration like Bush but the people decide in the end if they want an Obama or a Bush while all that happens.

Well still you said there's a reason why all those people migrate to the US implying because it is better than other countries but that's not necessarily true. There might be a perception that it is better but that perception might be misleading.

I suspect in 50 years, many people from third world countries will blame their status on China and India. It's a cycle that has been going on for quite some time. Whoever is top dog, they are the reason for all the world's problems.

Yeah, I mean the US does have a hand in some things but to put the blame squarely on them is pretty low. Don't worry when China correctly values their dollar and their growth slows down maybe people will stop with the whole CHINA GUN BE BETTA DAN AMERIKA LOLOLOOL mentality. It also seems people are all to happy for this.. who in their right mind would want China to be the global superpower? Seriously now....

The other side is also true. Whichever country is at the top is perceived to be the best one at least while they keep their moral authority.

Any super power that goes by the principle "it's either us, or them." should never be allowed to become a super power at all. The US and China are no different when it comes to this argument. So I honestly don't care who get this number so long they fall eventually.

China is going to buckle under their own weight eventually. Their growth is artificial. Not to mention the massive real estate bubble they got brewing right now.

China's growth is the growth of a body-builder taking steriods, if you take my meaning.

KH-mixerX
How? The American economy is artificial. China produces things... that is real growth.

By waiting patiently for a few years for #1 to crash violently into a pile of dust. The Chinese economy may be biggest, but it is easily the least stable. It could crash any day now.

#1 or #20, I really do not see the standard of living in the US changing all that much. We are experiencing one of the worst recessions in decades at the moment and the only people that got really screwed were people that bought houses when they should not have, and people who were irresponsible with their money, and maybe soem select jobs (i.e. education, government work, etc)

My opinion is that there are way to many proud Americans on these forums to admit the poor shape the United States is in. To many people in denial, don't want to admit that China is rapidly overtaking us.

Gang related crime in big cities should not be representative of the entire country.

considering the big cities house about %30 of the population and their landmass is relatively small compared to the rest of America; yeah, they are representative of America.
