Well, I went from loving hip hop a year ago, to hating it, and now after listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy again, it gave me a new interest in Hip Hop. Albeit, I'll probably never listen to anyone other than Kanye. The rhymes in MBDTF are amazing, so I downloaded Yeezus, and its been fantastic so far.

What do you OTers think?

P.S.

I'm sure Orbs loves the song,"I Am A God"

Kanyes lyrics are deep. This is the start to Pitchfork's review of Yeezus, and explains what "I Am A God" is all about.

"Look at the song title "I Am a God" and it seems like easy blasphemy-- Kanye West's update of John Lennon's "more popular than Jesus" shocker from 1966. But just as the Beatles' proclamation was fuller and wiser in context-- "I believe that what people call God is something in all of us," Lennon would later explain-- "I Am a God" is not simply the latest self-important blast from one of pop culture's pre-eminent egoists. For starters, the track sounds less triumphant than breathtakingly vexed, starting with a gnarled dancehall vocal sample and paranoid sawtooth synths that aim to destroy. Here, Kanye raps about loyalty, respect, threesomes, and, yes, croissants with the urgency of someone being chased by a 30-ton steamroller. The song is pierced by a series of primal screams, pixelated outbursts that are only briefly able to halt the beat's heaving evil. In Kanye's hands, being a god sounds stressful as hell, something we can all relate to, and the song's apparent inspiration is a passage from the book of Psalms: "I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High."" http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18172-kanye-west-yeezus/

Nah I disliked his music before I knew he was a douchebag. First listened to him in high school around 2006 or so.

Yeahhh if lyrics make a big difference for you then I get why you'd hate this, some of his lines on this album are pretty damn bad. Strictly from a lyrical standpoint it's probably his weakest.

Honestly, I only put forth one listen to the album. You guys have already have discussed Kanye's poor lyrical approach. Personally I don't like the use of auto tune on the album. What auto tune he used on MBDTF was used well. I do like some of the experimental production. However it was not enough for me really want to listen to it again. Maybe in the near future but not right now.

Sorry no. Pitchfork idea of "all of being able to relate to" "Kanye's idea of being a God as stressful" I don't buy it. Not sure how anyone, other than maybe Kanye himself could relate. Other people who have an large ego maybe? Pitchfork's idea of the John Lennon quite was interesting but Lennon and Kanye are quite different. I believe that MBDTF highlights the fame life (high's and low's) much better than the track "I am A God".

Sorry but I don't. Great thing about music in general is how you interpret the music and lyrics. If you can find some meaning of significance in the lyrics the more power to you.

I don't care for it at all. And man, that first track is weak. Doesn't really do much for first impressions.

It has a lack of standout songs, sometimes the production feels bold, but other times it just feels thrown together, the hooks are lazy, he's trying waaaay too hard to be vulgar, and alot of the time the record just doesn't sound very good to me; there's something sloppy about the whole thing. I was a huge fan of My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy, but I'm just not feeling this one.

Critics and reviewers I've been talking to have been giving it anywhere between 2-3 stars (5/10).  I haven't listened to it, but from people whose opinion I actually care to listen to, it doesn't seem like it's a very good album and it's just riding the softer end of the recently successful 'harshly produced' electronic hip hop scene.

I found MBDTF to be a five or a six out of ten myself, so I'm not sure how I'll enjoy this one.

I like it, another Kanye classic. Not as good a MBDTF but ehh, few albums are. I especially appreciate that he tries to go into a new direction with each album he pushes out. The man takes his art seriously.

Truth. Say whatever you want about the guy, but he's not content with just putting out "generic pop song" over and over again to make his money (which is something that he'd easily be able to do if he wanted). I respect him for that.

Yeah that worries me. At least I could see why some people enjoyed MBDTF. I heard from a friend who 'only likes Kanye's early material' that he liked Yeezus at first and after a listen or two it fell apart. I'll give it a chance down the road, but I don't have any high hopes.

Truth. Say whatever you want about the guy, but he's not content with just putting out "generic pop song" over and over again to make his money (which is something that he'd easily be able to do if he wanted). I respect him for that.

Yeah. Pretty amazing that he can go from College Dropout/Late Registration/Gruaduation to 808s to MBTDF to this. That's alot of artistic range.

[QUOTE="Shottayouth13-"]I especially appreciate that he tries to go into a new direction with each album he pushes out. The man takes his art seriously. JML897

That is what I looking forward to on this album. No radio single. New Slaves and Black Skinhead were bold and great tracks to perform before the album dropped. Wish the other tracks left the same impression on me as those two.

new slaves and bound 2 are the only two songs that are good, rest of the album is trash and I'm a big kanye west fan but it seems all he talks about now is his ego.

Yeahhh if lyrics make a big difference for you then I get why you'd hate this, some of his lines on this album are pretty damn bad. Strictly from a lyrical standpoint it's probably his weakest.

"I keep it 300, like the Romans"

Lyrics have never been Kanye's strong point.

Also true

Gotta disagree with you on that one
