At Hulu, 'free' may soon turn into 'fee'

The video website, launched by studios to distribute TV shows over the Internet without charge, now is considering ways to draw revenue, including charging for some episodes of popular shows.

Hulu soared to popularity by offering free online viewing of popular TV shows. Now that free ride may soon end.

The Internet video site is weighing plans to charge users to watch episodes of "30 Rock," "Modern Family" and "House." The move would mark a sharp change of course for the venture, which was launched nearly two years ago by a consortium of studios to distribute without charge TV shows and movies over the Internet.

The site has spent months studying how to strike a balance between what people expect to watch free online and what they would be willing to pay for, said people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly.

One plan being considered would allow users to view the five most recent episodes of TV shows free but would require a subscription of $4.99 a month to watch older episodes. Hulu believes it will need at least 20 TV series -- both current ones and those no longer on the air -- to make such a pay service attractive to users. A firm pricing model could emerge within six months, the sources said.

If I could watch Hulu on my TV through my Wii or 360 without commercials, then I might consider it, otherwise I have netflix, games, books and people to entertain me. TV executives overestimate TV's future.

That sounds good. I hope that they cycle through those five episodes though, especially when the show is off air during a break. I would think it would get stale to just have the five most recent episodes after awhile. If all else fails, I'd wish they they would have long commercial breaks that you can't skip through. That would make the most sense financially.

That stinks, I do visit the site from time to time. However, I already pay for Netflix so... I could just wait until it comes out on DVD.

At least they realize that they can't just put a pricetag on Hulu as it is and expect it to work. If Hulu gets full seasons of many TV shows I'm interested in, it may be worth the money. Netflix instant watch might really hurt it though...I can already watch Lost, Dexter, etc on there.

Canadians can't even use Hulu, but I don't care about that, I just wish Last.fm would be free for us.

I had heard about this a while ago but I thought it was just a rumor. I don't have cable TV so I stream Hulu through my computer to my PS3. If they start getting funding they better stop deleting old episodes. I only have till May to finish watching 5 seasons of Stargate :(

Not really a problem in my opinion, espeically if they go with the plan of only allowing the last 5 episodes. Maybe if they start making more money they will have more to offer, including free shows/movies.

if they do the free for the recent 5 episodes and $5 a month for all episodes (more than they currently have) then i don't think it's a bad deal. i just don't think hulu in it's current form is worth paying for.
