I am so fed up of autotune/mechanised singing in songs

I think it's a sad cop-out used by talentless people. Why in the world are we stuck listening to people who have to use autotuners to be able to sing when there are actually talented people out there?

I don't listen to the radio, so it's not a problem for me. Can't say I'm the biggest fan of autotune, but it's fine for an artist to use it.

cher used it in a couple songs. friggin T Pain and Kanye decided everyone with a microphone in their hands on the west coast needed autotune.

yep im fed up with it. anything that has auto tune that is not electronic music is ignored by me instantly.

First: Cher was not the first to use it.

Roger Troutman (of the R&B/Funk group Zapp) is largely credited with being the first to use it extensively. Also, George Clinton used it a bit with his Parliament/Funkadelic songs. I think Sly & The Family Stone even used it lightly in some songs.

Secondly, Rappers don't use it to "hide the fact that they can't sing". They are not singers. They are rappers. They use it to make their voices unique, because the voice has always been one way MC's were judged, and having a unique one was always a plus. Of course, it's not longer unique when everyone copies it but thats a different problem.
