Look at him, he's in an orange jump suit! Can you take Naruto seriously?

Nope.
This thread is about the character, not anime in general, so it doesnt. =]

To answer the question, meh. He has whiskers? I don't get it, but I'm sure theres a reason (?)

lol Media newbies posting above. =p And no, I can't really take him seriously. Not only is he in freaking orange, but he also gives non-anime watchers another reason to generalize. Believe it! (Yes I just did it, so what?)

He has pretty bland character design. I've never seen the show so I can't say anything more than physical appearances but he kind of looks like someone looked at Goku and said "make his uniform into a jumpsuit and make his hair blond and less spiky"

I have watched several animes, and, yes, they all seem to be very much over the top. Have I seen every anime? No. So I am speaking from the sample I have seen.

I didn't forget anything. I never stated marvel comics weren't over the top...I reference it in my original post. I am saying that I feel anime are even more so and I do not really enjoy watching them.

As someone who actually likes both sides of the fence, I can safely say that what's "over-the-top" to you baffles me. As a marvel fan, you should be totally aware of the fact that X-Men TAS feeds on drama and crazy/awkward screaming. And occasionally corny dialogue. Which I consider only beaten by the likes of Dragonball Z in terms of "over-the-top". I don't know what anime you've been watching, but you've sampled pretty umm...not well.

I can say the same for comic books. If I read, say, Superman, Iron Man, Captain America, and stuff like that, I would say it's just bunch of ridiculous American heroism drawn on paper with occasional emotions here and there, but if I read things like Batman, V for Vendetta, Sin City, Watchmen and stuff like that, I actually see more from the comic books. Same with anime. You watch, say Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece, you are going to have an impression all animes are like that. But once you get to watch Monster, Darker Than Black, or Evangelion, you will see huge differences.

Ok, with anime, at least from the television series, the constant, and often, useless dialogue that doesn't do much in terms of progression. Are comics guilty of this? Of course. Comics keep the dialogue corny and cheesy as well, and for the most part that's not the issue. Its the sheer amount of useless dialogue you encounter in anime that make them less than enjoyable for me. Then you have the endless episodic recycling that always, for some odd reason, need to reference back to a previous episode, some times more than once, for the purpose of explaining something that has already been explained. Then you have the constant "I must prove myself to everyone because I am down and out/or because I am an outcast" mentality. Every anime I have seen seems to revolve around this common theme. Its not just the main character, its almost every character has to explain why they are fighting for whatever they are fighting for every single time they are fighting. Then you have the "special move" that no one seems to use until the battle has gone on for an eternity, but this one move guarantees the victor of the hero and his/her team. But, before the special move there must be a lot, and I mean a lot, of talking or even filler episodes. Filler episodes. Seriously. Filler Episodes bug the hell out of me. As a fan on anime I am sure they bug the **** out of you as well. The drama is what makes these shows exciting, and I have never had an issue with such things. But its the way animes play out that make them so unenjoyable for me.

The entire series itself is awful. Is he still going on about the evil nine tailed fox that's in him? After what, 200 episodes?

Samurai Champloo took 26 episodes to tell a compelling story while Naruto took 200+ to tell a mediocre one.

I know exactly what you're feeling with what you said about the anime's you've seen, but i think you should check out Black Lagoon or Cowboy Bebop, they're my two favorite, western influenced anime's, might have a cliche or two, but they generally flip the formula around for a realistic tale that isn't completely obscene about avenging their spiritual ghost ancestors that haunt their swords :P

well the animes you mentioned are the animes I don't like watching. So I agree with you. The difference about comick book fans and anime fans is that I haven't seen a lot of comic book fans who only like comic books with shallow stories (not to mention that one series, say Batman, can be interpreted differently through various artist's and writer's perspective), but there are just tons of anime fans who only watches Naruto, One Piece, Code Geass, Death Note, and Bleach and think they know everything about anime. That really bugs the hell out of me.

I know exactly what you're feeling with what you said about the anime's you've seen, but i think you should check out Black Lagoon or Cowboy Bebop, they're my two favorite, western influenced anime's, might have a cliche or two, but they generally flip the formula around for a realistic tale that isn't completely obscene about avenging their spiritual ghost ancestors that haunt their swords :PFrostyPhantasm
Okay, for the sake of keeping an open mind, I will take a look at both of those animes. And if I enjoy them I will create a thread expressing how much I enjoy them.

The entire series itself is awful. Is he still going on about the evil nine tailed fox that's in him? After what, 200 episodes?

Samurai Champloo took 26 episodes to tell a compelling story while Naruto took 200+ to tell a mediocre one.

Champloo tensed me up to no end with the final battle with Mugen. I was ducking with the lad when the blades came-a-flying.

Yes. The two final battles were pretty tense.

I can't Naruto serious because I do not care for the story and most of the characters.

I may not have liked Naruto, as a character and a series, but I did enjoy Shikamuru and Neji (?)

*Fails to keep mouth shut* You know, I had issues with Black Lagoon. :P Then again, I'm really spoiled on the crazy awesome anime no one seems to watch and/or know about.

it wouldn't have that many if it didn't had any fillers.

What problems did you have with it? I thought the children assassin plot line was a tinsy bit far fetched, but other than that i had no qualms.

The best animes are the short ones. Cowboy Bepob, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death Note and Samurai Champloo all had about only 20-30 episodes.
