So i got a kitten a few months ago and i love her to death! even though she keeps me awake at night at times its always worth it to see her passed out on my bed cuz its so cute lol. Anyways lately instead of running around all the time she just stares outside the window and my guess is that she dreams of being outside so bad or something. I would let her out but i live in an apartment and pets arent exactly allowed and she is also an indoor cat and i dont want her getting anything from outside. So is it normal for cats to look out the window like this or should i try to find something else for her to do since she cant go outside?

I think so. My indoor cat is looking out the window right now. Cats like movement and it's just seeing whats going on outside. You should make sure it gets plenty of play time though.

Yes, cats look out windows. They also look at walls, light bulbs and just about anything else.

My cat can stare through my window for hours, it's what they do. Mine likes to watch the birds in the tree outside my window. But I can feel where you're coming from when you "feel bad" about not letting me more natural. :P I swear my cat wants to kill something and as soon as he gets the chance, he will.

If the cat has lived indoors it's whole life you're not depriving it of anything. Odds are if you opened the door to the outside it would freak out and run the other way.

What out the window?

If you are really that concerned get another kitten. Usually pairs of females are fine. Also most chances are the cat is seeing something that is making it's basic instincts foam at the mouth. It wants to kill. KILL.

I take it this is your first cat ? If so then when they are old enough they are ok to go outside. They will know their way back home.

Coming from someone that has years of experience with cats, my best advice is to spray your cat with Pine-Sol. They will feel like they are outdoors among the trees.

I live in a house, I only see my cat when he's hungry, otherwise he is always out. That's why I hate cats.

That is kind of sad. Cats are independent creatures, so that isn't surprising.

Yep, give it a nice perch by the window and put a bird feeder outside....they love it.

My ex had 2 cats, they stared outside all day. I got brave enough to let them out once. The first noise they heard was a car going by and both ran back for the door to get inside. Indoor cats may love looking outside but don't necessarilylike being out there.

My cats do that all the time. They like it. I have a perch by the window so they can sit up high and watch things go by.

I woulden't feel bad.. If they're indoor cats, they just like to look outside, not really go out there. If you let them out, they'll just be afraid. Whenever I let my cats out, they just stay in the backyard unless I leave. Then they're gone. That's only happened once when I went back inside for like 2 minutes real quick and one of my cats was gone for 4 days.. I'm just saying that they love the activity that's happening out there :)

Cats like to keep an eye on things. It doesn't mean they want to go outside. If it was an outdoors cat you'd know if it wanted to go outside because it would meow at the door that you normally let it out at. Don't worry, your cat's fine.

I guess that makes a lot of sense then. For example i took her to the vet today and on the car ride there she is freaking out lol. I never knew a cat could shake so much and while we waited for the vet to call us i had bear hug her cuz her shakes would not calm down.

My dog LOVES to be outside.. But when it comes to the car, he'll shake and cry the whole way wherever we're going.

Ours looks out the window quite a bit. Of course they'd all love to run around outside, but for instance with ours, we got him from the animal shelter where he wound up because he was a stray. So I have reason to believe that we would never see him again if we let him out. That's the case with most of the cats around our neighborhood - their owners let them run around outside, there used to be five or six of them around, now there's one left.

Even if they do stick around, they tend to get in fights and catch all sorts of diseases. Of course you can get them vaccinated for most stuff, but not rabies and that sort of thing.

I know how you feel, I got a kitten about half a year ago and it's like it's getting harder and harder to entertain him, letting him out is not an alternative either. I'm considering getting him a buddy though.

However, all indoor cats probably sit by the window, I usually feel pretty bad but some argue that you should think of it as them watching TV instead. I watch Psych and think: "man I wish I could do that and do this and be like that" and maybe it is the same for the cat, it doesn't necessarily means the cat is tired of its life!

Edit: Maybe worth mentioning if someone hasn't already; you can always get a suit and a leash and walk the cat but beware; it is possible the cat may start crying about being inside after having tasted too much of the outside. Also, you have to make sure the suit isn't escapable, my cat managed to escape this summer. He suddenly started panic like crazy and if you've seen a panicking cat, you know that's some hardcore **** and it somehow managed to escape. Gotta say I was really scared, since it happened in a forest, I am simply too paranoid to walk him since then.

My dog is always looking out the window like in the picture, so I got him a nice chair. I'm sure your cat would love you to death if you did the same.

Aren't you worried it won't come back? It could get hurt or die. If it's a female, what if it gets pregnant?

same with my cat, cats should be inside 24hours a day anyways, its bad for them.

the only reason people here are saying its normal for cats to look out windows for several hours are people who have their cats prisoned in their house

Kinda reminds me of those cases where people who have been in prison or stay at home too long, they pretty much go crazy when they step outside.

It's normal for a cat to sleep on anything it can get up on. They seem to like to be above it all.

I do worry, she's gone missing a few times. It's a miracle she hasn't been knocked up yet. :P

I'd welcome the kittys :D
