Okay I work part time at a convenience store, basically just on the weekends but I started working Tuesdays until my Golf II class starts in two weeks.

Anyway I've never missed a day of work in my 1 and a half years there, I was only late once because I got pulled over, and I'm usually 20 minutes early and often clock in early. I do my work which is more than the high school kids do, they just talk. In fact these two girls on the weekend text on their cellphones the entire shift while the assistant managers kind of don't notice it....

Well I just got a phone call on my online answering machine (56k) and my boss basically said there is an emergency and everyone called off for second shift tonight and he wanted me to come in from 4-10.

I live about 40 minutes away and in the country. The roads aren't as bad as they were this morning but there is still snow on the ones around my house.

Anyway my dad said he'd prefer me not to go in and I truly didn't want to go (I haven't had a day off since the break between semesters). I was afraid to call so I had my dad call and say I wasn't home and that he didn't want me coming in.

The last three times they tried to call me in I just ignored his phonecalls and never returned his calls. I think he's mad about that... I'm a full time college student and basically they know what days I want to work and how much I want to work. So I shouldn't be obligated to go in right?

I mean I'm not even a full time employee (I was before I started college).

I just feel really guilty....

I did a no-call no-show the other day simply because I was busy trying to make some investments in some "stock", but I didn't care.

But I work at Target, I don't care about that job, but if I were you, and it was your day off, I would tell them no.

If you are a student then that should be your priority. Avoiding being killed on dangerous roads is a good idea too. If you can’t do it, then you can’t do it. It’s a sucky deal for the manager but that’s something managers have to deal with.

So you missed a day of work. So what? Is that really gonna matter a hundred years from now?

Okay...But at the last meeting I went to (classes conflict with the monthly meeting) a few months ago he said something like "If we call you and you never return our call we're just going to have to find someone more reliable. " I don't think I'll be fired seeing as I'm probably the only non-manager who actually does work (besides two or three..None of the people my age work and many of the high school kids are consistently 15 minutes late).

40 minutes away in the country with bad roads? I'd say it was a good thing that you stayed home.

i agree that you should stay home, but you should pick up your phone when they call.

heh...Never...I haven't answered a phone call in forever. I have a cell phone but they don't know that :) I screen every call. Nobody but work calls me anyway (on the home phone). They can fire me if they want, maybe I can get into a student work program and do an internship this summer :)
