I feel like having this debate again: Is cheesecake a pie or a cake?

I feel that cheesecake is a misnomer. Although 'cake' is in the word cheesecake, I don't think it's actually a cake. To me, a cake is crumbly, and a cheescake is FAR too moist and dense to be a cake. I also think the biggest giveaway that cheesecake is a pie is the fact that it has a crust.

I agree. Cheesecake is the only "cake" that I've ever had that has crust.

It's a misleading term. Doesn't mean it should automatically define cheesecake as a cake.

I tend to think of cheesecake as more of a pie than a cake.

"Cheesecakes can be broadly categorized into two basic types: baked and unbaked. Both are considered to be pies, despite the given name."

Wikipedia obviously never lies, so there you go. :P

cheesecake is a custard base poured into a crust, therefore it is a pie, despite the name "cheesecake"

I mean, it makes sense...cheesecake sounds good...cheesepie though? Not so much.

Furthermore, "cakes" consist of a batter that is baked and then frosted. There is no such batter to cheesecake.

Easily a pie. I love all cakes, but I dont love all pies. And I hate cheesecake. Therefore cheesecake = pie.

its a pie, cakes are bread like and dont have a crust. pies are soft on the inside and have a crust. also cheesecake is made in a PIE DISH. i rest my case.

yea, but you order "jumbo shrimp" at a restuarant and theyre still pretty small. I expect anything with the title of "jumbo" to be at least as big as my hand...but no...those jumbo shrimps are a few grams larger than just plain ol' shrimps

Pie Definition:

1. A baked food composed of a pastry shell filled with fruit, meat, cheese, or other ingredients, and usually covered with a pastry crust.

There you go, its a pie.

I couldn't care less about cheesecake being a cake or a pie; either way I don't like it. I could never develop a taste for cheesecake, regular cake is far better.

I even made a goat cheese cheesecake, flavored with roasted bell pepper and topped with fig jam for an appetizer. It was amazing

This. It is not a cake unless it was made from a batter. Simple as that.

And that goes for ice cream cakes as well. Not cakes. An ice cream dish, or a pie at best.

So, we are pretty much at consensus here; except for a few blistering fools sayin' cake, it is generally accepted that it is a pie. Glad we sorted that out.

Since when cheese and cake add up. i am naturally demented being bilingual. The name sound bad, but the desert is

A Cheesecake poem: I simply cannot decide No matter how hard I try The word is intended to deceive me A sneaky, recreant lie So that every time I eat it I ask Is it a cake or a pie?

It's a cake because it's just like chocolate cake (well, the one I eat) and it doesn't have crust on top of it.

Pie: A layer cake having cream, custard, or jelly filling. So if a pie can be a cake, why can't a cake be a pie?

I mean, just type cheesecake and chocolate cake in google... They are both cakes.

Cheesecake is a cake. It might be a cultural thing but I only consider 'savory pies' to be pies and the rest to be cakes. When you say 'pie' to an Australian a meat pie is the first thing to come to mind.
