I was outside and I heard noises coming from under my grill and I found three kittens. I only managed to grab one, the other two ran into my neighbor's bushes. I don't know if it belongs to any of my neighbors but I don't think anyone would let kittens out on their own. Whenever I reach to pet it or pick it up it always hisses at me but it hasn't bit me yet. I put it inside my bathroom with a blanket, food, water, and a litter box. The kitten seems scared so I figured leaving it alone would calm it down. I check on it after 5 minutes and it's still sitting in the corner and it hasn't even touched the food.

I'm no cat expert and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to comfort it. All help is appreciated.

Sing it a love ballad, like a Toto or Journey song.

Leave the door open, its bound to venture out sooner or later, and as long as you give it food and a bed it will eventually warm up to you.

You can't really try and take a cat in off the street as it could be carying a variety of diseases. If you wish to keep the cat, call animal services and tell them that there is a stray that you wish to keep. They will come, pick it up and take it to a vet. It will get all of the neccessary shots(you will have to pay for it), and they will entrust the cat to you.

Picture? And really there's not much you can do to calm a scarred animal down. The best thing is to leave it alone for awhile.

I'd say to just leave it alone. It's not going to eat anything unless it calms down, and that's something that probably just needs time - many cats don't react very well at all to unfamiliar territory.

You should call the SPCA; they would probably know what to do (and could also pick it up, if you don't intend to keep it).

Go talk to your neighboursor look for an adult cat that looks slightly distressed or is acting kinda funny. It might have got knocked up and chosen your house to give birth (depending how old the kittens are) and gone off to look for food.

Also give the kitten milk... maybe warm milk... if it's young it won't want to eat dry or canned cat food, or much of anything else.

If I leave the door open wouldn't the cat go out and hide somewhere else?

Good point, maybe you should just let it calm down, untill you decide what to do with it.

Milk makes cats sick. Don't give it milk.

Unless it's already comfortable with you, having something forty times its size coming up to touch it is much more likely to scare it.

The best thing is to leave the door open and eventually it will wander out and become familiar with it's surroundings. Don't try to pet it or pick it up at the moment. Wait till it starts trusting the enviroment as well as you before you try any direct contact with it.

I had a sort of similar experience.

I was walking home after work and was waiting at a cross walk. As I stood there twirling my thumbs, I noticed something black comes towards me. As I took a closer inspection it was a black kitten. It climbed up my pant leg and into my arms and meowed a lot... A LOT. It looked a little thin but also looked it was being taken care of also. Perhaps it fell behind and got lost... or somene abondened it... or whatever.... it came to me and refused refused to stay. I carried it with me for a little while until I was close home. I let it down and it followed me home. The next day I had it get shots and the works.... and have had it for the past two years. Eventualy called it shadow(because it followed me home).

This happening to you just reminds me about my cat. Though, I think I had a much more warming/welcoming recpetion.

As you can tell by my avatar... I'm a cat person. Love cats.

I hope the cat starts warming up to you. Because if it doesn't... taking it to the vet isn't going to be all the easy(as if the cat is going to welcome the vet to inspect it).

That's kinda freaky, because I actually had a cat who just walked in from off the street and refused to leave, and I named him Shadow too. :P

Found the kitten under the grill? It's obvious what it wants. Grilled kitten ftw? Let me know if it tastes good and remember to clean it up (skin it, clean out the insides etc.).

Woah, what were the chances of that aye?

As for the prices... you're looking at anywhere between $150-$250. If you're determined enough, you can find special organizations who will do reduced shots and stuff for a period of time. Besides that, it costs a pretty penny.

Well for starters, you should be trying to avoid contact with it until after it has had its shots and has been de-wormed.

And I wouldn't let it outside either. You know it's just going to eventually get knocked up and have 6 babies of its own. And then each one of those babies is gonna have babies. Before you know it, your neighborhood is overrun with cats.

The only thing to do is to either keep it, give it to someone else, or have it destroyed. You can also choose to let it back outside, but only AFTER having it spayed/neutered. If you do decide to let it back outside, PLEASE have its reproductive system altered so that it cannot create more cats.

It's not that much. I think getting it neutered or spayed won't be more than about $100. And shots should run less than $100.

Well, I suppose it'd depend on one person's definition of "a lot". :P For quite a few people, hundreds of dollars in unexpected expenditures is quite a bit.

Well if you're gonna be keeping a cat, you've gotta figure that you'll soon be spending LOTS more than that on food, cat litter, etc. And considering that the actual CAT was completely free, a one time expenditure of $200 to get the cat neutered, dewormed, and vaccinated really ISN'T a lot. If you can't afford a one-time expenditure of $200 in order to make sure that your cat is healthy, then you probably shouldn't be owning cats.

I once made a thread here where I caught some cats, and people were giving me crap about it. Just like the topic-creator, there was a litter of cats and I managed to grab one of them. But I couldn't get to the others, because the mom was MEAN. So what I did was I took the kitten that I caught, and then stuck it in a box. I then put the box outside where the mom could hear the kitten crying. And then while the mom was busy trying to figure out how to get her baby out of a box, I casually walked up to the nest and grabbed all of her other babies too.

Anyway, just a suggestion for the topic creator. You only grabbed on of the babies, but you might be able to catch the other ones too, if you take the baby that you caught and use it as bait to distract the mother away from her remaining children.

Sounds like cats are procreating in your area, its only a matter of time before you have an army of cats in your backyard. Better get a big mean dog before your overun.

[QUOTE="mingo123"]dance in front of teh kitteh naked, I heard that makes teh kitteh's happyCloud_Insurance

typically when you wave something in front of a cat it will paw at it or try and bite it...you don't want a potentially disease carrying kitten biting your dong.

Or anywhere for that matter. Dude if that kitten you found has rabis and it bites you your most likely going to die so id be very careful and take to vet when you can if you plan on keeping it.

Ummm, you sure their mother didn't just leave to find some food and then you... Scattered all her kittens, and took one?

[QUOTE="MrGeezer"]

You only grabbed on of the babies, but you might be able to catch the other ones too, if you take the baby that you caught and use it as bait to distract the mother away from her remaining children.

what did you do with all the cats

Let's not discuss that, okay?
