[QUOTE="WolfattheDoor34"][QUOTE="Lockedge"] I will say it's very possible to hate the beatles. I used to loathe them, utterly and completely. Yellow Submarine is still the most putrid song ever written to paper and put into action. However, I have since warmed to a few of their songs, mostly tracks from Rubber Soul. Still, it's not impossible for someone to listen to the entire Beatles catalogue and come away empty handed when asked to pick "good songs" from it.Lockedge
I don't think it's possible to listen to their catalogue and still 'hate' them. Sure, someone may not like them but there's nothing offensive even about their worst songs. And I love Yellow Submarine in the scope of the album. I'll be honest that my initial hatred of the beatles came from my ridiculous music teachers in school, who force-fed Beatles' music down my throat, had me doing papers analyzing their music and lyrics...my grade 9 music teacher's curriculum revolved around the beatles' catalogue(and the odd clapton piece when he focused on guitar for a week or so). All music theory, all practice with instruments was using Beatles' music. The exam was either a performance of one of their songs, or an essay on what made The beatles such a monumental band. All of this, after my grade 7 teacher forcefed "Yellow Submarine" to the class for 3 months, as we learned to play in on the RECORDER(luckily, grade 8 provided a different teacher who actually helped me learn about some fundamentals). *blood vessels popping*
For me, it was less to do with their music so much as how it was presented. My grade 9 teacher expected everyone would learn that the beatles were the best band ever, and made the best music ever, and under those pretenses, it really rubbed me the wrong way. It didn't help that I didn't find much to like about the beatles' music, either. So yeah, musically, they're impossible to hate, but you could say that about most musicians. Musically, Nickelback makes generic rock songs that all sound the same, but there's nothing too hate-worthy there. No more than Revolution 9. It's the band Nickelback that causes my blood to boil, and The beatles had the same effect on me in high-school, and it took a while for me to willingly listen to their music again.
Thats a very interesting story. Almost the same thing happened to me except with Radiohead. The band is easily one of the best bands of all time, however, since even my current professor makes many references to them, I honestly lost appeal to their music. The songs have killed my eardrums to the point where if I hear Radiohead songs, it just sounds emotionless and generic which is not the case.
