hey guys heres how it works, right now i wanna give up fully and set fire to my dam books cause ive had the last straw.

I live in australia and we follow the most bullcrap english education system ever. You cant get good marks even if you work hard. Im a very hard working student. Im in all the top classes and whatnot and im one of the best at maths and science in my year. B im one of the worst at my english calses no matter how hard I work.

You wanan know what ive been doing for the past 1 and a half years of studyin in high school in australia. Ive been analysing stories, poems, songs and characters for that whole time. And it PISSING ME OFF!. I work so hard yet i get the wrost marks . My teacher thinks im a **** when just becuase i get bad marks in english and he doesnt even know my other marks which are good.

Right now im supposed to analyse a dam story. Answer some questions and whatnot and thats what ive been doing all this time. And you wanna know somehting, ive been worderin HOW THE HELL DOES ANALYSING A GOTDAM STORY HELP MY ASS IN REAL LIFE!. IM NOT TRYING TO BECOME A GOTDAM JOURNILIST HERE OR SOME BLOODY POET. cant they make a different subject for this ****

How do they expect to get good marks whne the story im reading now its about a future house, a nuclear bomb and a dam dead dog. Tell me what ur mind thinks on that beucase my mind thinks thats the most random **** im ever seen!

guys please tell me you agree that english homework these days is a waste of time.

Id rather be solving sums and equations.

Um, good rant for blog...but I know where you come from (I'm the maths/science type myself, and hated English). Unfortunately in Australia, it is still compulsory and you gotta do it regardless.

The only benefit English has is to get you the marks for a uni course after high school. If not, then you can go off to TAFE or work full time in a stock job without too much worry.

Do you want to be a scientist, or a mathematician, or a historian? English is one of the most important subjects even if you don't want a career directly relating to it. I enjoy English anyway.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm in NZ and english is a very finicky subject. I know a lot of very smart people who have the same problems as you as well as some stupid people who do very well.

I'm doing english in uni right now and getting A's. What I have found the markers are generally looking for is original thinking. Come up with something new, justify it, and you should get good marks.

But if all else fails you could try antistudy.com

There is a spell check function in FireFox and Gamespot offers an option as well. If you are going to write a massive note to people about how you hate learning English, it might be a good idea to proof read it before submitting it. I know you're angry, but it takes one minute to do.

It's always a good idea to re-read what you submit, not just on forums.

Actually, it's all quite relevant. You need to be able to express yourself and read between the lines no matter your career. I used to like analysing texts, especially ones I'd never read before.

That's the problem with education in the UK too. They do so much crap that is in no way related to English.

Analyzing the English language is such a waste of time. It's not like anybody ever uses it, and it's not like anybody ever says anything more complex than "I like tulips."

Once you analyze my sentences, you'll see why it's important. ;)

TEE in general is the biggest load of wang.

Just talk about context and ideologies instead of techniques like setting, characterisation or plot. You get loads more marks, especially if you can find some good original examples and can analyse them. Symbolism is also a handy technique to talk about often. All texts have it and it is so subjective that if you have a good argument you can prove symbolism in anything. I sucked arse at English in highschool (i live in Australia too btw) but that was mostly because I never finished an essay. Often was the occasion however that I would get more marks for a half done essay than my peers would get for a whole one. I killed the speeches though hehe, but that's a different story.

English does have a point though. It develops your ability to form and justify and argument, something that your topic post doesn't really achieve. Just hang in there; you only need to pass to prove your English competency to University, then it will never bother you again.

Keep asking him and ask him to explain it clearly. If you still feel you're not getting the right answers after a few more times then go straight to the head of the English department and ask him/her to explain it.

A lot of people speak simple but some people in the business world like using complicated sentence structures; that's why you are required to analyze sentences.

I can read it just fine, but I think proper writing skills should be used as much as possible, because people tend to get lazy and ultimately become useless at it.

But my biggest gripe comes from stories I've heard from friends that are teachers about the students they teach and how they write. I have seen first hand what some students submit as so called "work" and it's scary. Kids should not be writing essays in Messenger slang, nor should they be using it for résumés.

Well.... English class comes really easy to me... except when it comes to several page essays. I was the only person out of all the english classes to get a 93/95 on the test :) .

My hardest class is AP chemistry. I usually get 20 questions a day. 1 Lab explanation a week. 2 Practice Tests a week. Luckily, were only reviewing what we did last year.

Compared to all my normal classes, AP produce 10 times more homework.

I had like one problem set every two weeks in AP Chem, maybe a few labs the whole year, and no practice tests.

Bummer, if only you were doing SQA higherenglish. I would have had some tips for you. For instance, I worked right through the year up until my prelim - which I failed outright. In the time between then and the final, I started a singing quartet in our back corner with my friends during class, arranged 'Gatsby fights' and a load of other crap. My teacher didn't care (she marked my prelim). Come the final, I messed it up so badly, we had to write 2 essays in an hour and a half on two types of source material, I drew a load of references between the books and the soap 'neighbours' the exam board lapped it up andI got an A. Natrual talent FTW! 8)

who cares how he types its the internet no one gives a ****.

i think that u should only have to know the basic grammar and stuff i mean cmon when am i gonna have to identify a common noun from a proper noun, a interragotive sentence from an explanotory sentence, a coordinating conjunction from a interjective.

i dont even know wat all those mean to me once english gets to that point where its confusing stuff ull never use cept for a few jobs just have it as an elective like calculus or something

The Foreshadowing by Marcus Sedgwick. :|

The Foreshadowing

Know what's funny? :| I picked it up at that library and started reading it because I just had my first period, College English III, and had nothing else to do.

:P Plus the cover was pretty. >__>

Who cares how he types? It's the internet; no one gives a ****.

I think you should only be required to know the rules of basic grammar and stuff of that nature. I mean, c'mon! When am I going to need to distinguish a common noun from a proper noun, an interrogative sentence from an explanatory sentence, or a coordinating conjunction from an interjection?

I don't even know what all those terms mean.To me, once English gets to the point where the focus turns toward the sort of confusing detailsyou'll likely never use (except for a few jobs), it makes sense to just offer the course as an elective, similar tocalculus.atony12

I think that about fixes everything. You're welcome.

Just hang in there; you only need to pass to prove your English competency to University, then it will never bother you again.Buffalo_Soulja

thats some good tips man, ill follow them. Yea ill check with the englsih department if things get crazy but thesers only 1 good teacher which i had last year. She was the best teacher ever. Some of you guys are luckily. Pulling a A outa your ass by doing half completed essays lol. And some of you guys are just good at it. I read all your posts and ill try out ur tips with the subject

i wish i could do better in this subject beucase right now i put in so much effort but my results are bullcrap
