I think it is believed by analyzing and critically thinking about these stories, poems, classic novels, etc. it is hoped that you will ultimately become a better thinker and ultimately more knowledgable and be able to apply the critical thinking strategies to your other subjects when necessary. And all of this is supposed to make you a wiser and more mature individual. That's just what I heard, though.longdongsilvr
yea i agree with the critically thinking part but i aint never been a critical thinker so cant they just have another subject for this stuff beucase if i fail my english, there goes my uni plan for sometime
A very good trait for a desirable employee is to do what you are told, without question. thats what school trains you to do....
Anyways, Get over it. Analyzing a story is not that hard.
Def_Jef88
i havent complained at all to the teacher or nothin but its gettin just to hard for me. One of the stories i had to read, i found out info on it on the net, and its about lets see a nuclear bomb, a dead dog, and a robo house, that is really easy for me to understand, isnt it i mean its only musing all the most random things into one story(sacrasm)
i get whatcha saying man but i just cant take it no more
Well, analyzing books, poems, ect can give you a pretty good look at the culture from the time period that it was written in. For example, the epic poem Beowulf pretty much captivated the entire Anglo-Saxon culture. The novel "The Great Gatsby" captivates what people were like during the Roaring '20s in the US.
Not to mention that there is nothing wrong with a little culture.

I know, I work really, really hard at English and I get lousy marks, I have cried several times in class because I work hard and I get terrible marks. I just handed a nine question assignment today and it took me two hours to do and... Well, I hope you know that you're not the only one in that situation. angel-of-rain

TC,
english class helps us become more literate, and may even help get some kids interested in reading things other than harry potter...
my grade 11 english teacher opened my eyes to some of the best books i have or ever will read....
i know that's not really what you were having your little fit about (which should be in your blog, btw...not here) but still....uh.......grow up and deal with it.

because pissed means you are drunk, context example, "I am so pissed after I drank that much". I am pissed OFF means you are angry.
[QUOTE="The_Ish"][QUOTE="ayanami_rei"]That's not as bad as your teacher trying to fail you because you proved her wrong. >__> And least you weren't kicked out of the school library for reading a book.ayanami_rei
Assuming that story applies to you, what book was it?
The Foreshadowing by Marcus Sedgwick. :|The Foreshadowing
Know what's funny? :| I picked it up at that library and started reading it because I just had my first period, College English III, and had nothing else to do.
:P Plus the cover was pretty. >__>
But why did they kick you out?
I live in Australia and I finished my HSC two years ago. I agree that Standard/Advanced English (2 Unit) is a load of crap. Our English department was awful as well. However, the Extension 1 English (3 Unit) was much, much better. It was an intellectual study of texts and cultural, psychological, historical aspects of novels etc. If you want English that isn't patronising BS, then you should try Extension. But as for 2 Unit... it's catered to the masses so naturally it's mind numbing and stupid.
That being said, it's not hard to get decent marks in English. All English essays follow the same pattern. You have your theme, idea and texts. You basically summarise the theme and ideas in the introduction. Then you elaborate on how the texts are related to the theme in the body, give examples from the texts and utilize quotes to back it up. Throw in literary/film techniques to boost it. Rinse and repeat. Then in the conclusion you synthesise how your point has been proven. It's pretty easy.

haha science is like my best, looks like we are the opposiotes

The thing that really annoys me with scince is that it is such a broad subject. And we always study the things I don't like. E.g chemistry, physics. And the stuff I actually find alright, e.g biology we never study. What is strange is that I'm very good at maths and geography, which are both related to science yet I suck at science.
What about the people who want to become "Journalists, etc"? Also passing grades and up = Good marks. At least in Australia. Which you are in. Unless you are on of those weirdos who do nothing but work and try to get perfect marks?fkholmes
well i do attempt to get perfect marks. But i can accept failure so as long as i try harder next time.

haha your probably one of those analytical thinkers and im properly one of those fact direct straight to the point common sense logic thinkers. Though i would prefere to think the way you do i wouldnt really know how it would work out.
analyzing stories is to open your mind for interpretation and lead you further towards artistic and cultural enlightenment! duh jimmy-fly
haha thats why form now on im goona try to make a effort to like it
My IT teacher told me that when he was in high school, for an English exam they had to study a passage from a poem, memorise it, write it down in the exam and then analyse what the thinking behind it was. He forgot to memorise a poem so he wrote his own in the exam, and obviously knowing what the point of it was, finished quickly.
He got 4/10.
He explained the whole story to the principal and they changed his mark to 5/10.
Yep. School is crap.
Taalon
hahaha man that guy is luckly
Ouch. That sucks. English is easy for me.StarFoxA
lcuckly

most papers only write up to about an eighth grade level of English.
Are you in Victoria?
Here, in your final two years, you get a choice between English, Eng Literature and Eng Language...so you don't necessarily have to do any poetry interpretation (or whatever).Planeforger
nahh im in australia, we have something similar
I can definitely relate to the original poster. I'm stuck in the same poorly thought out Australian english curriculum as you are. As such I have taken it upon myself to start a rebellion. For example earlier this year we had to rewrite the ending of a story about an aboriginal boy who died for particular reasons. What I did was wrote an ending where he jumped out of the tree instead of fell and turned into a black ninja who killed all of the people that chased him up the tree. Unfortunately it turned out that they were all pirates. Massive battle ensues. Since then I made an effort to make each work requirement more random and controversial than the last. I also gave every piece of work the same heading "Jesus With a Pitchfork" and this semester I extended it so that the opening paragraph was exactly the same with a couple of words changed to make it relevant. If anyone wants to check it out you can find it on my myspace http://www.myspace.com/matthew_davis1990 LordXelNaga
hahahahhaa man ur like my hero, i wish i would do that
