I have figured out why people say "could of" instead of "could've

After giving this much thought and looking at words with similar contractions, I noticed that "Kinda" is a contraction of "Kind of". "Coulda", however is actually "Could've" which is "Could have". So most people who aren't exceptionally strong in grammar, would probably just think coulda = could of.

I don't think that's the correlation, it just sounds the same to some people when you say "could've" and "could of" fast.

I find myself correcting that mistake all the time, not because I care, but because every time I do it my 4rth grade teacher's nagging voice pops in my head.

That's not as bad as using "loose" in place of "lose", or "coarse" for "course".:P

Or "ya" or "yah" when it should be "Yeah", or at least "yes".:?

It doesn't matter which one they say unless they stress the "of" part to make it two distinct words. /taking-things-too-literally

Yeah, but so what. Within most English dialects could've sounds like could of or a coulda. So at this point who gives a damn? Nobody stresses the V. That's the way casual language is, it's gutteral and slang.

I always thought it was just because "could of" is phonetically identical to "could've".

I guess so too, but that won't happen if you know what you're saying rather than just spelling it phonetically. eg; I won't spell soiree as swaray. Generally you don't use words you can't spell or don't know the meaning behind. Could of makes no sense at all. It's like people who say irregardless.

Evidently you haven't been on the internet for very long. :P I see that all the time. There are tons of examples of people just giving a word or phrase their best shot while evidently not really knowing what they're saying. The oft-used "case and point" is another good example (the correct phrase is "case in point").

Coulda isn't actually a word, and could've isn't a proper contraction. Kinda like ain't. It's popular, people say it all the time, but its not actually in the dictionary, and it's not a proper contraction. So even if you use it in its correct form, you're still not strong in grammar because they aren't even words or in proper form. And yes, I always use kinda, coulda, could've and could have all in their proper form. I never actually use the contractions though, except for in text messages just to save characters.

Yes I know that, but kinda is the exception. Kinda = Kind Of, not Kind Have.

I know a lot of people here who say "could of" or "should of" instead of "could/should have" because it sounds similar, so they think it's correct.

ya and yah and meant to be said like that thought. The person does not intead the word to be read as the standard yeah. Ya and yah are typically said with some sarcasm or added accent as far I have seen.

It actually does happen.

Many times I have written "were" in stead of "where" although I know what I want to write but the identicality of their sound confuses me (although "were" and "where" are slightly different, at least in some accents), but I have made other mistakes with words that sound the same even though I know which one I want to use.

I see what you did there....

I don't know. Whenever I use those wrds its just for brevity's sake. I know it isn't much of a difference in characters, but it seems to flow better. I don't use them like that in real conversation though hahah

There's no real connection there, it's just when people say it they both sound phonetically correct. Sort of like there, their and they're.
