The bar itself. Then add 10 pounds on, and another if you can do that.

The bar, and if you can't do that then do presses with dumbbells.

I've never benchpressed either, but I might be able to take a crack at this. How many push-ups can you do without stopping and how much do you weigh?

Start with the bar and work your way up, if you can do 10 reps easy, then increase it by 10 lbs and try to do another 10. You want to try to assess your max before you start lifting so you can tell where to begin. So then go down to 8 reps, then 6,5,3,1. Until you find you find your max. Then you can start a legitamate benchpress routine whenever you do chest, starting off with a warm up then 55% of your max going up to around 85%

That doesnt help calculate max bench press, for instance; i can do about 80 pushups weighing at 250. But i can benchpress 425lbs, since you arent lifting your entire body when you do pushups it is very hard to calculate a max or close to a max by pushups. Since i have more explosiveness in my pectorals and upper body i can lift a heavy weight for little reps, but my muscles werent trained for high endurance so therefore i wouldnt be able to do as many pushups.

It'd be best to ask one of the trainers at the gym to recommend a weight and spot you for the first set or so - it's hard to prescribe exercise if we don;t know your height, weight, strength, etc.

A trainer can also help determine if you should be doing narrow or wide grip stance, sort your technique out, etc - it will do sod all if you have a poor technique.
