I must say it was very good. It's not number one on my list, probably number 3 behind The Godfather and The Dark Knight.
What say you OT?? Did you love it, like it, think it overrated?

absolutely fantastic. So fantastic that, imo, all of Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins's performances have been in the shadow of their roles in this film and it'll probably remain that way for the rest of their careers. Truly a great, great movie. All the more unique considering that it was concocted by Stephen King. If I could only recommend only three movies to anyone, it'd be this one along with the Godfather Part 1 and Forrest Gump.Paladin_KingWow, spot on Paladin. I agree on all points. :)
It's a brilliant film, but No. 1 is A Clockwork Orange, I couldn't imagine any part of that ilm being improved. It also has to compete with the likes of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Seven Samurai, Taxi Driver, Dr. Strangelove et cetera. _glatisant_Never seen A Clockwork Orange. I guess I should see it :P
It was the only movie in High School that I wanted to stay after class to watch and I took an American History class that pretty much consisted of watching movies (we saw maybe 15 movies in that class, including The Patriot and Amistad).
EDIT: I watched the movie in my Grade 11 Law class (abuse in Prisons) not in the American History class. Just explaining it for anyone wondering why they would show The Shawshank Redemption in an American History class.

Read the book by Anthony Burgess as well, but leave out the abomination that is the 21st chapter.

what's so bad about the 21st chapter?I should have explained that it's the last chapter of the book, and for some obscure reason Burgess felt the need to go completely against the personality of the central character forcing an ending which is just horrible. You are much better off without it. If I hadn't been warned about how bad it was myself it would have spoilt the book for me.
Samsies, but substitute Forrest Gump with the Departed...maybe
Actually, just recommend those 4 movies!
I've never seen Forest Gump either :cry:Samsies, but substitute Forrest Gump with the Departed...maybe
