It is my first ticket, but going to court means my parents are going to find out, which I dont want. cowboys89Well, then. Let me warn you. You'll be getting information in the mail about your ticket. Keep your eye out. Sometimes it comes quick, sometimes it takes months. :P Anyway... as to insurance... I don't think it will affect insurance rates at all. They may never even find out you got a ticket, tbqh. It's mostly accidents that hurt your rate. Or a LOT of points will have a serious effect. Edit: But I can't stress enough how important I view going to court. I mean, if the cop doesn't show up, you don't have to pay ANYTHING. You can get off scot-free... Where in MD you live anyway?
Any points against your license will cause your rate to increase. 2 points will only make it increase a small amout, but any more and your're screwed.
Here's a way to get the ticket lowered. Find the number of the magistrate court of the county that the ticket was given. Call them and speak to the judge. Say that the officer that gave you the ticket said for you to call and speak to the judge about having the points dropped from the ticket, since it was your first offense. They will almost always lower the points and fine. If he gives you any difficulty just say you will pay a higher fine to counter the points. You really have nothing to lose by giving it a shot.
I got a ticket on I-95 in Florence, SC and that's what the officer told me to do. Worked well, so I've done it twice since then. This has worked wonders for me in SC, but can't guarantee anything in MD.
Hey, I live in MD too. If it's your first ticket, you can go to court and they'll probably give you probation before judgment, which means you pay the fine (which may be reduced), but your points don't get applied as long as you don't get another ticket for some amount of time. Anywhere from 6 months to 3 years.Jandurin
When I saw he was from MD, I wondered if you would show up. The last ticket I received was in MD (knocks on wood). And honestly, out of the three states I've received tickets in, they were the most reasonable.
Even though it will suck, my suggestion to you is that you let your parents know what happened. There's a high likely hood that they will find out anyway either through a letter or an increase in their car insurance. So, just tell them or they'll be more mad, and less likely to trust you, than if you had just talked to them. By the way, how fast were you going and what was the speed limit?
Am I that predictable? :P Not just that, but I've had PLENTY of experience with speeding tickets. :P Also: cowboys99: Just tell your parents :? The worst they should do is make it so you're only allowed to drive to work... but it's so much better to be honest with your parents. Especially if they, you know, feed you and house you. When I saw he was from MD, I wondered if you would show up. The last ticket I received was in MD (knocks on wood).

I'll be checking the mail constantly, thanks for the warning. Have you ever got any points on your license? I doubt the cop would show for court. Im sure the only reason he pulled me over was because he thought I was drinking and he was bored. (2 am) But I just talked to my sister and she said it will show up on my parents insurance so I have to tell them anyway :(
and Im curious if it would affect the insurance rate. Im on my parents car insurance and they have been looking for a reason not to let me drive from day 1, and now Im thinking I just did it. It will only be 2 points on my license but does anyone know if thats enough to raise the insurance rate? I live in Maryland, USA by the way.cowboys89
As far as I know is in MASS, it is $500 extra a year for six years. Also if it is your first time with a ticket go and appeal it, I mean what do you got to lose? Secondly if you do appeal it there is a good chance if you don't have a driving record that the clerk might be nice and let it slide. Thats if it wasn't rediculously over the speed limit.
Forgot to say, TELL YOUR PARENTS! The earlier you tell them the less angry they will be, cuz they will find out. Go ahead and get your story together and make it relate to your parents. If you have been with them when they got a ticket, incorporate that into it. Do whatever you can to ease the blow, but you are still going to be punnished. have fun
wtf. Maybe it's different in MD? I'm sure I had a point at some point and it didn't change anything...As far as I know is in MASS, it is $500 extra a year for six years.

I don't really agree with this. The ticket itself should be punishment enough. He's getting fined money and has to go to court now. Shouldn't the legal issue be enough?but you are still going to be punnished. have fun

Im going to have to tell them now, and I will likely never drive again. I was going 70 in a 50, but he wrote the ticket for a 59 in a 50 because my record was clean. It just sucks cuz I was chillin with some friends and everybody was drunk as hell (under 21). Im the only one who didnt drink and Im the only one who gets in troube for something. I was literally speeding for 5 seconds and the cop was behind a tree on this lil dirt road just sitting there. Its seems like I always do the least bad things and get in trouble for it.[QUOTE="xscrapzx"]wtf. Maybe it's different in MD? I know in MASS it used to be $300, but it went up a couple of years ago. In Mass we don't go by steps anymore either it goes by points which I really don't understand the whole thing quite clearly.

I agree, but parents use a different type of logic.

No not really because he effects the parents monthly enough with his inexperience of being a motorist and if he gets a ticket his step or point will go up which then in return affect the parents rates as well.
Oh, well, I always paid my portion of the insurance for the car I was using when I was on my parent's plan, so my rate was the only one getting affected. No not really because he affects the parents monthly enough with his inexperience of being a motorist and if he gets a ticket his step or point will go up which then in return affect the parents rates as well.

No I hear what you are saying. If I had a kid and he was under my insurance any price changes he would be paying me for but then again having somebody else on your insurance is very risky.

How does court work for a ticket...as far as length of the hearing and what i have to wear and all that?cowboys89It takes a few hours. You get there at like 8:30 AM or whatever 30 minutes before your hearing, you wear nice clothes (pretty much at least business casual), and then you go to court with like 30 other people and wait for your name to be called. Then you plead guilty or not guilty... but, you're guilty, so you just ask for them to let you off easy. If the cop doesn't show, then the judge will just call your name then tell you that you're cool and you owe nothing. But... it's a county cop, so he'll 95% chance be there.
[QUOTE="Jandurin"]you're lucky, man. 59 in a 50 is a hell of a lot better than 70 in a 50. Make sure you don't tell your parents that he cut you a break. :Pcowboys89lol..theres no way in hell i would tell them that.....but he did write the number 70 right in the middle of the ticket, even though in line for it he wrote i was going 59. So i have to make a excuse for that too.
Your lucky he didn't cut your license up in front of you and bring your in for reckless driving!

But if it was a state trooper, Im sure the fine would be more so Id be screwed either way. Im thinkin from now on I will just sit still and fold my hands that way I dont get in troube for anything. It seems like no matter what I do I take a L somehow. I even got my license late. I just got it last march, so i dont have a full license, still on the provisional. According to the cop, I shouldnt be driving after midnite, even though Im 18. im sure that will also cause a problem somehow.

Yea he had this look on his face like "i should effin smack you". He didnt even even flash his lights at first, as if he didnt really want to pull me over but felt he had 2. I wanted to hint at getting a warning, but he was already letting me off easier than he could have so I was not about to push my luckI just got it last march, so i dont have a full license, still on the provisional. So... are you going to slow down and start following the speed limit now?foxhound_foxMy parents are STRICT and already dont like me driving, so I doubt I will get the chance to slow down and follow the limit. As soon as they get home from work, my driving days are probably over :( But if by a miracle I do get to keep driving, Im not speeding ever again.

This is what I like to see.foxhound_foxlame. speeding ftw. :o Nah, speeding isn't a good idea... but it sure as hell is fun sometimes.

How long was your license suspended for?cowboys89Just during the summer. And it worked out because I left my one job and got a landscaping job where they came and picked me up. Man I got strong that summer. Seriously strong. Yeah... CHECK IT OUT. How long before your provisionals runs out? This is very very important.

Traffic court is nothing like regular court like you see on tv. You just go in a small conference room and wait on the officer to show up. If he does, you have a small conversation about it and maybe have it dropped. If he doesn't drop the ticket or come to an agreement, the judge will come in and you will plead your case (and you don't have one...). The judge might choose to drop it out of kindness, but more likely you will have to pay the fine and accept the ticket. On the other hand, there is probably a 50/50 shot that the officer will not show up. Since your fine is pretty small, i would say you have a 70% shot that the officer won't show up.
Once again, this is how things work in SC. MD might be very different, haven't been caught there, YET!

This is true, but it was early in the morning and the roads were completely empty, which is the only reason I was speeding anyway. cowboys89

If you can get your provisionals off before you actually go to court, you're technically still innocent and can get your license un provisionalized. Otherwise, it resets.
[QUOTE="DJ_Lae"]that is insane. Were you street racing, and how much was that ticket? Somehow, I don't think he got caught. :PI went 160 in an 80 zone once, which I have a feeling is grounds for immediate license suspension here.
Never again.
