so what, LEO's don't have days off? (sorry, couldn't help it)

in all honesty, yes. every day an LEO dons his uniform and goes to work, there is risk. Every traffic stop can turn into a lethal encounter. The problem lays with the bully cops, that also use that line to make it sound like every day is the last 20 minutes of a Lethal Weapon movie, were they get into a huge gunfight against criminals armed to the teeth, when all they have is a 6-shooter. That, is just plain untrue (otherwise the states would probably have Martial Law all the time). Which in turn fans the flames of the "take that line and shove it" mentality.

I admit that there are some (read: a lot) really bad cops but I'm glad that you agree in the danger of the job.

I never said that. For instance. Just because someone is a sex offender that doesn't mean that the cops that go to take this sex offender into custody are in danger. If you try to take a gang banger, like a blood, crip MS13 member into custody, then yes. YOU ARE in danger. Not all criminals are dangerous towards cops. Seriously do I have to explain this to an adult?

No they're not...

In the 80's and prior to that... Sure... They could push you around, and yell at you all they wanted... 1990s+... Police 101 all the way though graduation is be kind and curtious... Because literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON EARTH has some type of recording medium and in the 90's virtually every police department in North America was sued for something...

And I am sure you are bending the truth a little bit... I know for a fact that they did not forcibly take your keys and open your car - Not unless they had probable cause... And since you were driving down the road slowly, with bloodshot eyes (you said you just woke up) with your emergency blinkers on... They probably had cause... Especially since you were apprehensive and defensive...

They can't just take your word for it, or any junkie drughead driving down the road high can just say "oh I was sleeping I just woke up"...

And police usually only get "nasty" when you are "nasty" with them... If they ask you a simple question and you start spouting excuses or questioning them... They probably aren't going to like that...

True, but lets not act like on the job death rates of cops due to violence vary in certain parts of the country. Like where I live it's pretty low. It just depends on what part of the country that you live on how dangerous being a cop will be.

If Big Red actually lives in central FL, he should know this.

Just recently a guy shot a cop in the head at a routine traffic stop because he had a warrant. Yep, not dangerous at all.

He can't sue them, they are protected by their employer (The municipality). If it were true he would be suing the municipality they work for. And all of the citizens within that districtwouldbe payingthe lawsuit. He would be paying for alot of window repairs since every citizen within the city will probably throw a brick through at least one of his windows at some point. That's a lot of windows to replace.

I don't think there is anything you can do. I'm not a legal expert, but your "tired state" may have given them probable cause to search your car. Again, I could be wrong. As for verbally harassing, there is a point that is too far, but it is different from precinct to precinct. Police are allowed to intimidate you.

I haven't. Cops like me for some reason. And you, and I both live in Central Florida.

I hear our cops are pricks. I rarely have contact with them though. Just once, I guess he thought a ten year old looking up at the moon with a telescope was bad.

Other than that, though, I like to be optimistic and only think a cop is a prick when he is, in actuality, being a prick.

Cops are emotionally challenged individuals that are incapable of liking anyone or anything, because that would interfere with their main objective in life, to abuse their power and make those around them cower in fear.

(Mods I am indeed being sarcastic. I am one of the few that don't view the police in an unbelievably negative way.)

Hehe, this sounds like something I would say. :)

Anyway, as regards the current discussion, I don't think every police officer puts their life on the line every day. Every soldier, fireman, astronaut, mercenary, or whatever-profession doesn't put their life at risk every day. However, cops are entrusted to commit violence and put themselves in harms way to protect us. I think that deserves a measure of respect.

Personally, I've never found the police to be the slightest bit useful; all they do is pull me over or make me drive slow, and when I go to a dangerous place for work, they're never around. However, I recognize the concept of deterrence, that orderly society is maintained because people know the cops are at hand if someone gets out of line; there are lots of places I can go and feel safe. Seems there's a whole s***load of people who don't get that.

Joke thread? If you were honestly harassed, why would you post this on GS?
