Cops are emotionally challenged individuals that are incapable of liking anyone or anything, because that would interfere with their main objective in life, to abuse their power and make those around them cower in fear.
(Mods I am indeed being sarcastic. I am one of the few that don't view the police in an unbelievably negative way.)

Hehe, this sounds like something I would say. :)
Anyway, as regards the current discussion, I don't think every police officer puts their life on the line every day. Every soldier, fireman, astronaut, mercenary, or whatever-profession doesn't put their life at risk every day. However, cops are entrusted to commit violence and put themselves in harms way to protect us. I think that deserves a measure of respect.
Personally, I've never found the police to be the slightest bit useful; all they do is pull me over or make me drive slow, and when I go to a dangerous place for work, they're never around. However, I recognize the concept of deterrence, that orderly society is maintained because people know the cops are at hand if someone gets out of line; there are lots of places I can go and feel safe. Seems there's a whole s***load of people who don't get that.
