i originally planned becoming a art teacher and i attended 1 year at the university of illinois at chicago. i started to realize that being an art teacher or being around art people was not for me. so now i plan on attending a trade school and picking up an associates degree and become a certified hvac-r technician

anyone change their minds while in college?

I believe most people change their majors 2-3 times before they find one to stick with. That's what I heard anyways.. chances are I'm probably right.

I did two years of computer engineering before realizing I hated calculus and realized engineers were just as obnoxious and elitist as people make them out to be. I'm not sure if economists are any better, but I sure enjoyed the courses more.

As a former teacher...GOOD CALL...it sucks (although art teacher might have been cool)

You can make just as much (if not way more) with that or any 2 year certification, such as medical trade certification (surgical, x-ray, etc.)

I wanted to be an art teacher since before 1st grade. When I reached my final year in high school I decided to become a pastor instead. Now instead of teaching how to do art, I want to teach with art.

I was going to do Comp Sci but similarly realized I hate advanced maths so I went with Political Science and never looked back. But Liberal Arts degrees are so random, it's hard to find something to do that directly uses my major.

You are not required to be like that if you become an art teacher. You'd just have to deal with a certain "genre" of people to a greater extent. My own art teacher in high school was rather normal.

I attended 1 semester at Virginia Tech and decided that I hate engineering in general. So I left there and went to UTI in Pennsylvania, and haven't looked back since. Working on cars is much more enjoyable than sitting in an office crunching numbers or staring at overly complicated crud.

I went from Graphic Design to Computer Graphics Technology, to Illustration, and finally finished college with a degree in Psychology. Don't ask how I went on to Psychology. I'm kind of having regrets majoring in it. I want to major in illustration because I still want to become a cartoonist.

I had kindergarten. :P But I honestly do remember my first day of kindergarten. I remember drawing a picture and showing it to the teacher. One of my earliest memories was when I was about 3 years old. I was crawling on the floor and I wanted to draw a picture using something my brother had. After taking art classes, I figured teaching art would be fun.

I always assumed that people were just being mean, or being jealous when they talked of engineers like that. Then I got into courses with them and realized it was common - they'd make fun of the computer science students that shared some classes (even the profs) and not in a lighthearted sort of way. A lot of them were unwilling to work in groups, too, and if you formed a study group and asked questions about the material you weren't clear about, a lot of them would just laugh at you and refuse to answer.

Absolutely amazing. The teachers and the entire staff in general are some of the nicest people around. Hands on is great, the facilities and the equipment are all top notch. You definitely gain a skill set there that will last you your whole life.

The average person changes their major 8 times before they graduate. So far my college track has gone something like this:

undecided...psychology...psychology w/ bio minor...psychology w/ double minor in bio and chem...neuroscience

So for me the only changes were that I kept gradually getting more and more involved in the harder sciences. The only issue that came out of that is that I'm now graduating a year late thanks to me taking a year to figure out that I wanted to do bioscience.

Well I coupled it with a minor in Philosophy and was getting ready to go to Law School until I realized I had been in school for 16 1/2 years already and needed a break.

I got into my university yesterday and am starting classes Wednesday, so I'll see how I like my classes then.

When I was in High School, I thought I would want to be an engineer and go into engineering when going to college. After taking an engineering class each year in High School, and realizing that I was slow at it, not that great at it, and not enjoying it, I decided engineering wasn't for me. I'm in university undecided now.

I almost quit during my Junior year, but I decided to drudge through the rest of college so that my previous years and money weren't a total waste. Incidentally, I went into the trades after college, like you are thinking about doing. You will make more money as an HVAC tech then you will as a teacher...

I'm just getting a certification, the only campus that offers an Associates of Occupational Studies is Pheonix. I went to the Exton/Philly school. Finished my 66 weeks with the Ford FACT. I'm also going to be doing the PTAP down in Atlanta soon. Seriously, if you're into tinkering with cars and really would like to make good good money doing it I can't speak more highly of UTI.

That's odd... I don't know any obnoxious engineers here at my school. Actually, now that I think about it, I had an ex-engineer as a high school Calculus teacher, who could really be a elitist jerk at times. So scratch that. But anyways, I just recently changed my own major after telling myself from the start that I'd try my hardest not to ever change. Things just happen though.

HVAC is the money man.

I used to work as an aprentice for one. He would make 1,700$ A day while being on commision.

But that was on really hot days and the hours are crazy sometimes (7am to 11pm)and it is only seasonal. So you gotta save up the money for whn the jobs slow down. But its definitly worth it.

I eventually turned into a tech but by then there would only be 1 or 2 jobs a day so I left the trade and started college.

I was fixing AC's since I was 16 (I look alot older then I look)

Good idea to change your mind while still in college! I think you'll be just fine, just have to take a bit longer than you originially planned. I SO wish I hadn't waited until after I graduated to change my life plan. STUPID.

I almost went to UIC, how was it in general? If you don't mind my asking. I've always wondered...

Us engineers are elitist! How dare you say that! (Yes, James thank you for driving me to my laptop). :P But no, I almost changed my major, but I stuck with chemical engineering once I found out it has a lot in common with Legos.

I came into my freshman year as a Computer Science major. After a semester I switched to History and I've stuck with that ever since (I just started my Sophomore year of classes today).
