I think the word "auther" is actually "author." I dunno about the death and war parts but I thought the diary of Anne Frank is a story worth learning.

The Plot Against America is a great historical fiction book, about Charles Lindbergh becoming president during WW2. It's by Philip Roth. I've never read any of his other books, but that one is one of my favorites.

Henryk Sienkiewicz

I highly recommend Quo Vadis. It has everything you want, it's my favourite book and it was the main reason he received a Nobel for.

Ken Follett. His book, The Pillars of the Earth, is quite full of death and that kind of stuff.

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Trilogy. Throughout the series, there's death, history and war.

McCarthy won a Pulitzer for The Road, which is a post-apocalyptic story about a man and his son's trek across a desolate America. Just a warning, that book is not written like most books, (for example, there are no quotation marks), and is very graphic in some areas (we're talking cannibalism here).

There is Jose Saramago. A great novelist, although his novels he only uses period and commas for punctuation on purpose. He doesnt use - " ? ! ; : ( ) in any part. It is hard to get used to that reading, but it is nice.
