These are not classic rock but you said you were open to anything so:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xzU9Qqdqww- Kid Cudi ( rapper who'll make you think and his songs are sincere and about his life)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH8QICzCO8g- Band of Horses (Indie Rock)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTkL_K6ykr8- Angels and Airwaves ( Punkish Rock that has pretty deep meanings IMO)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNfWC4Sgkcs- Arcade Fire ( probably the deepest, most thought provoking music I know of. The lead singer's voice can be a little annoying/hard to understand but he sings about real life problems. The music is also very unique in what instruments the band uses.)
The National

Lemme add to this, as per my obligatory "if you're asking, you should listen to The National" post. If you feel to step out of the "just rock" feeling, go for TN.
You can try this on, or for your trip to England, this might help :P.
You should try some Blue Oyster Cult:
Godzilla (70s)
Harvest Moon (90s)
Veteran Of The Pyschic Wars (80s)
They went on for a long time, but some how managed to maintain that 70s rock sound.
Along with Led Zeppelin, Rush and Jethro Tull my all time favourite band.
