I think the word "emo" should stop being used the way it is.

Dont you hate how any music with a tiny resemblance of personal emotion is labeled emo? I mean, there are bands that take it too far when it comes to fads, but it pisses me off when a band that has a slightly depressing song, its labeled emo.

EDIT: I mean, i guess its okay to describe the type of music your listening to, but the word has such a negative connotation that people take it the wrong way.

Dont you agree?

No. Its just an overused word that people use to describe every sort of slightly sad song.

I guess its not that horrible to describe a song, but the word has such a negative connotation, which it shouldnt.

well most 'emo' is a subcategory of the punk rock genre and since I hate punk rock, I steer clear of all 'emo'.

I like classic rock (pink floyd namely) and modern rock/hard rock/metal (disturbed, breaking benjamin, audioslave...)

Keep the name for the genre of music. Get rid of the word to describe anything emotional. It's a sick way of belittling human emotions. I agree with TC.

I agree completely with your idea and edit. I think it more refers to a fashion style/ group stereotype than music. Music has so many different genre's that very few bands can be pidgeonholed.

Agreed.

However: Name me an AC/DC song that is sad, and I will give you either my PS3 or my 360.

I don't listen anything even related to that kind of music, so I don't generally end up calling music emo, because I never listen to that stuff.

I pretty much like stuff like: AC/DC, a little Judas Priest, and some modern stuff like Distured, Breaking Benjamin, Drop Box is ok (only heard a couple songs, don't really know how modern they are) and some Nickelback, though most of their stuff I don't like, but Burn it to The Ground FTW!

Well then you're both wrong seeing as emo is a sub genre of punk Someone who is sad or depressed is emo now? That's incredibly poor logic.

Isnt emo a type a music that is very personal and shows a lot of emotion?

Would something very happy and personal be considered emo then?

I just thought about this...

Yeah, but that kid would fit into the 'fad' category i was talking about. The real word emo shouldnt describe that kid. I think "pathetic and sad" work just fine.

Yeah, I know what your talking about. My favourite song is Adam's Song by Blink-182 and when people hear it they call it emo just because it's about depression and suicide and you know that kind of stuff...

Ok maybe the song is sort of emo (just a tiny little bit!) but when I try to get people to listen to some of Blink's happier music they say "I don't want to listen to your stupid emo music!" It gets on my nerves so much!

Oh my God! Thats one of the things that sparked this! Blink 182 is my favorite band ever! Waggy, Enthused, Pathetic, Not Now are all my favorite songs. And if you listen to most of their music, it has a positive message and a very upbeat sound to it. The song Adam's Song i wouldnt even consider emo music because it is actually about NOT commiting suicide and doing something better.

Call them whatever you want i guess, but their not "emos." Thats just the term thats been used to describe pathetic people who want attention. And trust me, i know the people your talking about, extremely annoying people. But they still shouldnt be called "emos" cuz thats not the root of that word and it bothers me. Emo is just a word thats a type of music.

[QUOTE="DooDooPeePee"]I mean, i guess its okay to describe the type of music your listening to, but the word has such a negative connotation that people take it the wrong way.Funky_Llama
The negative connotation probably has something to do with the fact that emo music tends to be, y'know, Godawful.

I'm betting you think emo is the pop punk music of today....

T_T I hate when people use it to describe Anime, or Final Fantasyblack_tempest

I had no clue people did that.

Made me rage.
