I started to take a conversation course at an American foundation here, and honestly I was so proud today, I felt so advanced and superior to the rest of the class lol.

Thank you OT for nearly making me wetting my pants if I wrote something wrong. And as a gift, put this in your sig if you want to:

Starting a sentence with and? That seems like pretty bad form to me. :P

Don't ask me, I'm no English Major, and English is a tricky language where a house can burn up as it burns down, where you drive in a parkway and park in a driveway. I just wanted to be funnay. >_>

But I think both can be used. From usually denotes separation, but to can be used to compare, so I think either/or, but if someone else can elaborate.

'From' is more to do with indicating the origin of something which has moved whether in a physical or metaphorical sense. The only comparison using 'from' I can think of off the top of my head is "far removed from".

Here is an interesting piece of information I found on the interwebz. I remembered it when I read a post from here.

"Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend. If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell? How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"

You're welcome. EDIT: Bold doesn't work. Starting the last sentence with 'and' is unnecessary and not good form.

Actually many of the greatest writers of today have agreed that using "and" to start a sentence is in many cases acceptable. It's a good rule for students learning English, but many accomplished scholars see the value in bending these rules to manipulate the language and add some flare to their writing.

How is 'superior to' more correct than 'superior from'?

If anything, it should be "superior compared to the rest of,,,."

Don't ask me, I'm no English Major, and English is a tricky language where a house can burn up as it burns down, where you drive in a parkway and park in a driveway. I just wanted to be funnay. >_>

But I think both can be used. From usually denotes separation, but to can be used to compare, so I think either/or, but if someone else can elaborate.

the_foreign_guy

Complaining about English are we? If people here find English hard then I can't imagine how you will find Spanish or French. In Spanish you must put tildes (don't know how it is said in English) in words because there are words that are written the same way but the tilde makes it quite different. For example: hacia and hacía, both are completely different words. I find that French is way harder though, they use like three tildes.

Uh... English is one of the hardest languages to learn, and tildes are very easy to understand. Have you ever noticed that in the English language there are times when the same exact word is used for a number of different meanings?

In Spanish you must put tildes (don't know how it is said in English) in words because there are words that are written the same way but the tilde makes it quite different. For example: hacia and hacía, both are completely different words. I find that French is way harder though, they use like three tildes.

Uh... English is one of the hardest languages to learn, and tildes are very easy to understand. Have you ever noticed that in the English language there are times when the same exact word is used for a number of different meanings?

Oh yeah, I still haven't learned all the meanings of indeed. Well, it may be because I understood English easily (don't know how) and I said that because almost all my acquaintances have problems with the language. Of course, this is speaking from someone that comes from a country that doesn't speak English. Btw, Spanish has that too and for understand the tildes you must learn alot of things like the rules, the pronunciation of the word, some special rules called hiato, diptongo and triptongo, etc. I find that people have problems in English in the spelling, for example with the vowels.

PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"

please can you provide a source for this quotation?

Forgot a few more White Knight, I started to take a conversation course [Conversation Course is a proper noun because it specifies what course you took and where] at an American foundation[Foundation is also proper] here[as White Knight pointed out, we do not know where "here is], and honestly I was so proud today [ A person cannot be "honestly proud;" either you are proud or not. A modifier error], I felt so advanced and superior to the rest of the class lol [another modifier error, "advance and superior" as adjectives do not modify a noun. You attempt to modify "i" but failed]. Thank you OT [comma here because of the introductory phrase] for nearly making me wetting [wetting, really?] my pants if I wrote something wrong [entire sentence is a fragment; notice the sentence contains no main clause]. And as a gift, [Dangling Modifier, no subject following the phrase "And" as a gift"] put this in your sig if you want to: [Last error is a punctuation error. The word "to" is used either a preposition or a helping verb; in this case, the word "to" is used as preposition. A colon cannot be preceded by a preposition--ever]. -Ruckus, Rhetoric and Composition Teacher/Professional Editor/Game article writer. P.S.
