So, I've always been, (not to sound like a jerk), much bigger and much stronger then anyone I know. I mean, I'm only 6'0/1 but I have to wear XLs and XXLs because of how wide my shoulders are. I weigh 210 Lbs and I have barely any fat on me. (seems hard to believe but its very true). Anyways, even though I'm only 6'0 I play down low on the Varsity basketball team at my HS and always bang with the 6'6/6'7 Centers we have to go against and I always enjoy the battle and the fight down there.

Because of this I've become interested in Boxing. I've fought before and never loved it or anything but it seems very fun to box and I'd love to get into it.

So, any OTers that box, where do you go to box? What should I expect my first time? Are there any competitions for boxing or is it just for fun? I mean, can I fight in a tournament or anything?

Go to the nearest bar with your gloves on, and call every guy in there Nancy.

Don't open your mouth to scream "Not in the face, either" You need to protect those teeth. Keep your hands up and you'll be fine.

Pic or it never happened! :P

Well in boxing there are two things you need to focus,

a) Be fast and hit as many times as possible, tryin to last through the whole fight

b) Be strong and hit only a few times but making them count trying to end the fight in a couple of rounds.

First time you should expect lots of exhaustion, just because boxing requires lots of cardio excercise if you are a cardio guy go for it, otherwise get ready to train til you pass out

I tried out boxing with some friends at the gym. They had some gloves, a speed bag and a punching bag (no ring). Try practicing on the bags first. There's usually someone there that is willing to spar

Haha well honestly i don't have a six pack or anything but my stomach is flat. I don't lift that much and I can max bench about 240/250 at 16 years old. I just got lucky in terms of strength. I'm not trying to brag so sorry if it seems like that.

If i was to box right now I'd probably let them come to me and when I saw an opening try to smash their skull in, so type B more then A. In the end though, if I was to get hit too hard and I was upset I'd probably lose it and go type A all over the place haha. Probably wouldn't work out for me though.

Well first you need a place that teaches u, you'll start with the basics, posing it may seem gay but in boxing the pose defines everything, the position of your feet is quite a factor to determine wether you win or lose If you take a look closely boxers don't just walk around the ring, if you look at their feet you'll notice they move in a different way, you'll first need to move that way. To be more agile, if I may say. It's a little uncofortable at first but you'll adapt second you might get hit a lot and you may faint, a lot but don't let that scare you it's part of the process, scared already? :P

Boxing is really about stamina, speed, agility and being fast on your feet rather then just brute force. I'd imagine you'd be in the heavyweight division with other people around the same size as you so you won't have that much of a upper hand on anybody else you're fighting unless they are much smaller then you which is unlikely given the weight divisions. I'd imagine you are a mesomorph (naturally athletic) which is good, wish I could say the same as I'm in between a Ecto and a Meso but honestly if you want to get into boxing just go down to your local boxing club and talk with the coaches.

If you want to really prepare yourself you should buy a punching bag, run, do some strength training, do lots of ab exersises, skip rope, run some more and did I mention running?

Oh not at all haha. I got knocked out cold this summer by a 6'11 300 lb kid named Al at one of our basketball camps. Elbowed me right in the back of the head, then fell over me and landed on top of me. It wasn't even that bad either. Just a headache for a few days.

Do Muay Thai kickboxing which is what i do and i find it more fun and competitive due to the fact that its practically a MMA fight that doesnt go to the ground aas your aloud to use clinch work and knee people and elbow, punch, kick and in some cases wrestle em to the ground but the wrestle bit is very rare.

also due to the extreme cardio training and the muay thai kicks you will do your core will get a good workout and i had a 6 pack after a couple of months from doing it and there are lots of tournaments around usaully and beleive me when i say it is alot of fun

It appears that I am the only one who boxes regularly, so I will go ahead and say that Stamina is key to boxing. If you plan to compete, and you lack good stamina, you will lose. It doesn't appear that there is anything I can tell you other than to always keep your stance, or you will get messed up bad. You should find a Boxing gym and sign up, an instructor will tell you everything you need to know.

Well you may be 6ft and 210 but if you start boxing you will be put in the same weight class anyways so dont expect too much. Depending on where you live there should be gyms in town that have boxing studios and trainers to use but at a cost and there should be some leagues you could get in. Be careful with boxing, too much knockouts and getting bashed in the head will dumb you down over time as it kills brain cells and causes concussions.

http://www.boxinggyms.com/

you can find gyms in your area there. And it depends on where you are but I would almost garauntee there will be competetive bouts and tournaments you can fight in. However, don't expect to be entering any competetive bouts any time soon. Most gyms require a full year of training / sparring before they let you fight. And prepared to be worked harder than you probably ever have before. But it sounds like you might enjoy it so that will help :)
