Hmm I don't know about asking her out. I'd just try and arrange something in the holidays where you're in a group with some of your friends and her friends like at a party or like the movies and just slowly drop the hints that you like her and see what she does.

Tell her how you feel and ask her out, its the only way you will know if she likes you. Look and sound confident when you talk to her, girls like confident.
A girl you don't know very well simply saying hi to you doesn't mean anything. If anything, she's limited to saying hi and a nice smile because you don't know each other well enough to engange in a meaningful and deep conversation.
Someone saying hi doesn't really mean much but if you realy wanted to find out just engage in a conversation with her and watch for her tone of voice and her responses.
