Canada isn't socialist. It's got a mixed market like every other western country. Though places like Canada and Germany have weathered the storm far better than the US and Greece, which i chalk up to their regulatory systems and their social safety nets.

None of those countries are socialist. They are, in fact, capitalistic like the US (with the exception of China which is communist, although they're moving towards capitalism and Hong Kong is probably the freest economy in the world).

My sarcasm meter is broken right now so I can't really tell if you're being sarcastic but China is pretty much the country you'd pick if you wanted to describe absolute nearly laissez-faire capitalism. On your second point, what?

Canada socialist? I don't know about that, they charged me $150 so I could work up there earlier this year. Doesn't seem very socialist to me.

Doesn't Socialism imply that the government owes all the factors of production? If that is the case then those countries should not have a private sector. Correct me if I am wrong, but each of those countries has a private sector with companies that control some factors of production.

No, not really. Compared to the US a country like Norway would be much more socialist but its still nowhere near actual socialism.

Pure socialism doesn't work well, nor does pure capitalism. What most "Socialist" nations do are infact combine them and make sure there is a free market while also ensuring everybody to have right to free medical care and other benefits that comes from paying taxes.

And my point is that none of the countries you listed are socialist at all. They're not even socialist compared to the US. You need to stop listening to conservative pundits who can't tell the difference between facism, socialism, communism, and mixed economies.

Yes. So many people have no idea what there are talking about. All of the countries that TC mentioned employ capitalism. They may have more social welfare programs than the U.S., but that in no way means that the economy, and what contributes to GDP, isn't capitalism. If having those programs mean a country was socialist or communist, then the U.S. would be right up there with our social security, medicare//medicaid, U.S. postal service, public schools, etc. etc.

Australia has had record growth for the past several years because CHINA, where I am living right now and have lived for the past 14 years, is expanding their extremely capitalist economy so fast that they need all the raw materials they can get their hands on. That's why China props up regimes like Sudan, Iran etc. because they need their resources. The australian economy is heavily reliant on mineral exports (mostly to China) which wasn't hurt too badly by the recession. Japan has been stagnant for over 15 years, with near 0 growth, an aging demographic and occasional bouts of deflationary currency.

China is a longer story (or at least I know more about it) and can't really be answered in 1 post. BUT, A) Chinese people love to save. Why? Because China has NO, NONE, ZERO social safety network. Like as in, if you can't pay at a hospital they won't operate despite you bleeding out on their floor. (I know because we took this kid to a hospital that had been hit by a car once and they wouldn't operate until my friend's mom agreed to pay for him). B) They have a HUGE trade surplus, which means the government has buckets of cash and so do most companies. And since the economy is heavily interfered with by the government, when the recession hit they put something in the neighborhood of 200-300 billion dollars into the economy to keep things running. Those are just two reasons that I can think of off the top of my head.

As for Canada, who knows why those canooks do anything?:)

Actually this is very interesting. If you looked at the polls between Clinton's attempt at healthcare reform and Obama's, you'll find point where the majority of the population would be open to single-payer, but when it Obama attempted healthcare reform, the majority of the population turned against it. It's scary what propaganda can do.

Tommy Douglas on Medicare, pay attention to the per-capita spending that Canada does compared to the US at the time (1983).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2oUInTUlAM

Now look at this, CRS report to Congress on spending done on healthcare out of all of the OECD nations, look who's at the top and then compare the increase in spending between the US and Canada from 1983 to 2004.

http://assets.opencrs.com/rpts/RL34175_20070917.pdf

Edit: For those that do not want to read, spending per-capita

1983:

US: 9% of GDP
Canada: 7% of GDP

2004:

US: 15.3% of GDP
Canada: 9.9% of GDP

Also consider the fact that the US has a higher GDP than Canada.

What he is trying to do is make republicans look foolish. He comes in and brandishes a claim made by notable republicans then has everyone in the thread go against/dispute said claim. Look at his posts in this thread, you'll see it.

No you wouldn't. The Chinese government intervenes regularly in their economy. It is very carefully controlled and not even close to laissez-faire capitalism. It is a mixed economy that leans towards socialism and interventionism.

I honestly think that most people who talk about "socialist countries" and "capitalist countries" don't understand the basic concepts they're speaking of.

As someone else in this thread already stated, most Western countries have a mix of socialist and capitalist policies.

This thread speaks of the US as a capitalist country, but it implements some widespread socialist programs such as welfare, social security, medicare, and medicaid. It also speaks of Canada as a socialist country, but it's economy is based on capitalism foremost with socialist programs added in.

Let's dispel the "capitalist countries" vs "socialist countries" myth and start talking about which socialist programs work well and which don't.

Er, right. :PGabuEx

And if I may continue...

It is a fact that many people in Canada have died because of their poorly run state healthcare system. Some of them mind you, have been able to receive the care they needed by going to the US. We should be asking ourselves why this is the case. Barbara Wagner from Oregon was denied a life-saving drug by their state-run healthcare system but was offered a drug for assisted suicidethat article
In actuality, this was in the state of Oregon, not Canada.

This fine piece of journalism also shows a horrific lack of proof to back up the claims, as well as basic journalistic standards, like, you know, objectivity.

No country is really booming right now, 'cept Best Korea of course. -Sun_Tzu-
China's had double digit GDP growth for the past 10+ years. Including 2008-09. 2010 looks on track to match it.

[QUOTE="bluezy"]

[QUOTE="IZoMBiEI"]theres some crazy republicans that think having universal healthcare automatically makes the entire country socialist. This is in fact wrong and is used a just a scare tactic.Former_Slacker

A scare tactic that really sucks, because we like ours here. You guys would probably like it, too.

There was a poll that showed when broken down, most americans agreed with Obama's healthcare reform.

Always go by this simple rule. NEVER listen to a fellow American when it comes to telling you how other countries function in regards to relevant social programs. If you want to know something about any given nation, ask people who actually live there.

I'm actually one who still disagrees with it.

But that's only because it doesn't go as far as I'd like :P
