I would choose the M16 (or it's variant). It's more accurate, and it doesn't jam nearly as bad as some people are saying. If you regularly clean it, it won't jam too bad on you as long as you keep it out of the sand and mud. The rounds are smaller, thus you can carry more rounds.Manly-manly-man

Well, clean any gun and it shouldn't jam, but that's the thing, when you compare the two, the AK is better when it comes to maintenance and reliability. I've seen Afghans take their shoelaces and make a knot in them, dip it in motor oil, and use it as a squeegee for the AK's barrel, and boom, it's ready to go, I don't think you could do that and think "hmm...that's clean enough" for must guns.

Definetly the AK. Just because the M4 is easier to control doesn't make it better. I doubt any people know how to field strip it here and without proper cleaning the M4 is a piece of crap. The Ak on the other hand requires very little maitenace, is simple and is incredibly hardy. zombiefruit

Truth, there are accounts in numerous conflicts were US soldiers used AK's rather than their own M4's because they jammed and malfunctioned.

Reliability and maintenence isn't the only category to compare, though. The M16 variants will put the rounds closer to where you want them, and you'll be able to carry more rounds to do so.

What about a combination of both the AK and the M4? like use the AK for close range and the M4 for long distances?

People tend to forget that the m4 we are using now is substantially more reliable then the one we were using in the 1960s, reliabililty isn't so much a problem anymore with the armalites.

Wouldn't matter. They are both good carbines. Any AR-15 rifle or carbine would be fine, I wouldn't care if was the military issued M4 or some other AR-15, because they're basically all the same, all of the parts are the same. If I could choose I would pick the M4 Commando because it has the 11.5" barrel instead of 14 some odd inch barrel. I also don't care for the A3 Reciever. I prefer the A2 Reciever. And I would go with a custom A2 reciever. One that supports a 4 position selector instead of 3. That way I could have safe, single, burst and full automatic in one trigger group. Burst handles better, but full auto is good for cover and supression fire so it's a good option to have.

Ultimately I would choose my M1A Scout. It's .30 caliber opposed to .22 caliber. so the M1A offers more range penetration and more hurt than the AR-15/M-16 series. Winchester's .308 is much more powerful than Russia's 7.62x39. But the AK-47 was designed for close and short range so it handles better on full auto because the cartridge is much shorter.

The reason we use the M4 and M16 is because they are better rifles, the Ak-47 is simple and cheap to produce that is why most terrorists use the weapon. In reality it isnt all that good, it is extremely inaccurate and the round travels much slower than a 5.56mm round. Larger round doesnt mean better, the M4's 5.56 round is faster and more accurate than the Ak's 7.62. The M4 is a great weapon and i would use that above all others in an urban environment. With the exception of the 416 which seems to be a pretty accurate, reliable and powerful weapon. It would be a tough choice.UrbanSpartan125

Both the SKS and AK-47 are good carbines. I know from experience. I have experience machining. I'm not an expert but I can tell you from engineering that a machine with fewer parts is less likely to fail. A machine with loose and free parts is more forgiving.

Have you ever field stripped an AK-47 or SKS? There is nothing to them. You pop the top off and there's a mainspring and nothing but space around it. The AR-15 is whole mess of tightly fitted parts.

Both the SKS and AK-47 are ingenious. They are cheap they are simplistic and they perform.
