Modern, hard alternative, indie, doesn't matter. Just no punk or heavy metal with a ton of screaming (but some screaming like Stone Sour is okay).

Especially since the "Freebird! Freebird!" thing at concerts started on the '78 live recording of the Skynyrd, and it must have taken at least three years for that song to get that popular out of all the rest of the nearly identical Synyrd songs.

One of the best rock songs ever, IMO, is "Another Morning Stoner" by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. Passionate, angry, noisy, yet very melodic. Look at it on YouTube.
