You should look at the Kimber Tactical or Covert lines. I own a Tactical Entry II and i cant make an argument for owning anything else.
If you get something for home defense or as a carry sidearm make sure it has an all Black finish. Stainless Steel is shiny. The less the other person can see your gun the better.
The Tactical Entry comes with an ACC rail for additions like laser optics or LED flashlights. ( i have a flare/dot combo on mine ).
As for the caliber of the gun. I personally would not get anything smaller than a 10mm or .40 caliber ( both are nearly indentical size with the 10mm being a hotter loaded round ).
9mm is just too small and too impotent for novice gun users. It doesnt have the knockdown power for "pray and spray" shooters and if you arent good with shot placement the person is probably going to rush and kill you with your own gun before they bleed to death.
For emergency defense ( home intruder, carry situations etc ) you need upfront knockdown power. I suggest the .45 ACP round.
I also suggest using Splinter tip hollow points. In a residentual area you dont want your round to have a ton of target penetration ( round sails outside your house and into someone else's etc ). With a splintering hollow point the round will fracture on impact after hitting its initial target essentially keeping your gunfire inside your own home.
