Hello everyone as the title states I am in need of career advice. At first I had a desire to work in the game industry but after realising that I am not a great artist or a mathematician(not good enough at algebra to be a programmer) I would have to change my goals, soI don't know what to do with my life. I am out of high school with a normal job at a retail bookstore chain , but I want something more with my life . I have no clue what to do so I have turned to others for help. A part of me wants to still work in the game industry while my other half wishes to be writer and journalist but I don't know if I would be any good. What should I do?

Gaming journalist.

That's what I'm aiming for. You need strong knowledge of the New Media.

Since you want to work in the gaming industry and you like to write, you could write the plot of the game or you could write novels about the games..(you know how there are Warcraft/Diablo books?)

I'm always slightly worried that topics like this might just be serious, so I'll just say that you should try to find a career counselor, whether it be at the college you go to or the school you're graduating from. You'll be able to get more answers and hopefully get an idea of what can be in store for you in the future. The Internet is also a helpful tool to use, but for an important decision like this maybe it's better face to face with a professional.

Gaming journalist sounds like what you want, but you need to read lots of books, practice writing and it'll be a bonus if your able to write something entertaining and funny (otherwise you'll end up reviewing hard drives for some random PC mag), Me personally, I just like a good woman by my side and whatever the hell life brings me along with it. The way I look at it, most people only want a good job because they think it will buy them a house and sound good as a pick up line. I don't make my job my life, it's better that way, less worrys.

First off this is a serious topic , I am in need of help . Second I graduated from high school last year so I won't be asking my guidance counselor for help . Third sadly I have not started college yet because I don't know what to do so I would not know what to major in. Fourth I don't care to join the military , that advice was given to me by my fateher not to long ago and my answer is still no.

To Saluki, I don't want a good job to buy a house or to use as a pick up line , but to be a independent creative person . I want to have a great job that will make me happy not to be used as something against others or as a distraction for myself, but I do agree with your philosophy about going with whatever happens.

Well duxup I enjoy classic literature, comics, gaming , and music. I was a C/D student in math and science, but received B's and A's in my other courses when I was in highschool . Is there anything else you need?

I suggest the military, at least when you go to school then they'll pay for it.

yea this is a good idea.

there are also a lot of good programs out there that are not four-year institutions that can kind of get your foot in the door if college is out of the question.

I definately plan on returning to school after I get my brewmaster's certification and getting some sort of journalism qualification so I can write. My momma always said I have a knack for writing lol

Go to college for programming. Your math skills will improve with time, it's fully within your capacity.

Maybe , so I should start preparing for a surprise attack then ,but that was funny about the life insurance money , knowing how cheap of a man my father is he would kill me for it . Also to fiscope I don't think that my math skills could ever improve as I said before in high school I was not good at math, I always got C's or a couple of D's . It was also the same with science , luckily I was good at all my other subjects that I did in school.

Watch yourself Saluki your parents could be planning your demise as we speak, just joking but I find it scary to know that our parents can make money off our own death. Well I appreciate all of the advice ,lets just hope it works. Also to duxup why would you think that I would want to be a process server , I am sorry but normally those guys are hated for giving you court papers.

So you like video games, but lack the math skills to be a developer, and the artist skills to be a designer. You also want to be a journalist or writer. Hmm, where in the world would you find a happy medium between journalism and video games...Especially on a site like GAMESPOT! (big hint there. :P)

Haha, jokes aside, become a video game journalist, you can play games, review them, or try out up and coming games and write a preview on them. It seems to be your favoured option. :)

Have you actually taken a crack at programming? You don't have to be that great at math to be a good programmer. And if there is any other skill you have, it may be useful in some way in the game industry.

You actually need to be pretty good at math. Well, at least good enough to get through courses like Calc 2 and Linear Algebra.

Mmmm, not really in my experience; I've done a fair bit of 3d programming and really, matrix math and basic algebra covered everything I needed. Of course, if you are doing something like coding a engine with normal mapping and stuff implemented from scratch, some vector math would come in as well, but still, I can't think of any time that calculus of any kind was an issue in any of the programming I've done.
