I usually read the textbook, but that's because I have 0 passion in my subject, when I take what I want next year going to classes will be fun.

I don't. Well, I do..but very rarely, and most people probably wouldn't consider it "notetaking."

When I feel the need, I use pen and paper. My notetaking consists only of writing down keywords/phrases to assist in my recalling important points later on, as well noting the stuff that's harder for me to absorb, like formulas.

My notes would be pretty much useless to anyone but myself..but writing down much more than what I do actually makes it difficult for me to keep up and focus on the lecture. Most of the time I don't take notes at all, but simply listen. Thing is, I can quickly absorb information through lecture..but I'm not so great with textbook/note study.

I have a few old notebooks from completed courses. Only the first 3-5 pages of these notebooks have anything at all on them. Bunch of wasted paper. What's more is I don't think I really even used the notes, but I guess it's the actual process of notetaking that's helpful for most, rather than being able to look back on them later (err...or am I wrong about that?)

I write notes down in a book. I use a laptop for working in the library. But during lectures, there's nowhere to plug it in, so it would run out of battery some of the time. Plus I need the notes for lessons later in the day, sometimes straight after. I don't have access to a printer, and I wouldn't want to have the laptop in front of me during a class discussion. It would feel strange.

Well, if I'm going to take notes.. I use a pen and paper.. However, majority of the time I just listen, but you said "and hopefully remember." Well, there was really no reason to include that in the poll option unless you were going to make the option "and always remember". If I do listen in class, I always remember. I don't hopefully remember. I know I'm going to remember.

Pen/pencil and paper for all. Right after class, I'll Google down the stuffs I don't get. I'm lucky enough that my Uni have podcasts for more than half of my lectures. So most of the time I just try to get the gist in class and get back to it at night via the podcasts. It really helps, especially nearing the exam period.

Thats what i thought too. At least half the class has a laptop and 25% of them are on minclips. I saw one guy on Gamepot. Thats right i look at peoples screens when i am bored.

I thought so as well.

[QUOTE="rawsavon"] This as well...computers suck for notes and provide too much distraction

that's what i found too. there would be times where i would want to draw or add arrows from one section to another or add comments to a part of notes that i took and it's much more distracting to try to do that with a laptop. Plus with paper i don't need to look at it much as i take the notes. but the laptop screen begs for attention which means less for the professor.

There is very little reason to take a laptop into a class room.. half the people will use them for something else besides paying attention.. then the other half is barely using them.. probably like 1 or 2 guys that has a laptop would even consider taking notes on them. OF course, this is just what I've observed at my university. I may be wrong.

Good ol' pen and paper. If I had my computer I'd never get anything done. :P

Pen and paper is the best way to take notes; there's a process in your brain that occurs when you're writing that helps solidify the information in your memory. You can't get that from tape recorders.

Though I don't usually take notes, except in math classes; normally I rely on memory.

I take notes with pen and paper. But I am so bored to type (for some reason my hand is reluctant to type properly - no joke; my hand-writing can get pretty huge if I let go and the letters I make are like a group of drunk people: one is fallen down, the other is jumping, the other is crawling etc) and also just listening helps me a lot.

Taking notes in lectures isn't really necessary to pass, but I just used a pen and paper last session. However, since I now have an iPhone I'm going to use that next session for everything other than my maths course
